Great results!
This was my first experience with rust bluing. I did a lot of research first before jumping in. This product worked great, you just need to follow the instructions, no shortcuts. Probably the most important part is degreasing. I used Acetone and it worked but you have to be diligent to make sure the whole gun is absolutely grease free. I think next time I'll use a boiling solution. Initial passes were a little uneven but by the time I was done the finish was perfect. Start to finish does take some time because you need to do many applications but I was able to speed things up a little by building a steam cabinet.
As always works as advertised
Blued a barrel and receiver for a 64 Romi AKM, went a little light to match the original finish. Product works excellent
The best
Ive used this to re-blue several Lugers and it works great. I degrease with Dawn and Simple Green until the water sheets on the metal and I apply the bluing with a natural bristle brush. I have a rich satin blue in 2-3 passes. Ive found Pilkingtons to be much more finicky and not as consistent. Save your money and use this.
good finish with appropriate patience
I re-finished a Colt model M (1908) .380 with this product and it turned out great. 4 applications did the job for me. Took it up to our local gun club and received nothing but positive comments on the finish. My buddy did a trapdoor Springfield with Pilkingtons and I see no difference but a substantial cost savings.
Wonderful stuff!!
This amazing "Old School" product allowed me to make a beautiful piece from a 74 year old 1911 slide and a brand new Caspian receiver. There are some great new products out there but they just are not gonna beat "Grand Dads" way. Great stuff; just have a little patients, follow directions exactly and you will end up with a piece good enough for the County Fair!!!
Consistently high quality finishes!
This solution is superior to other solutions that I have tried, and the final finish is excellent. My customers have had no complaints and are always pleased with the result. I agree with a previous poster to cut the rusting time short rather than letting it go too long...however, I have had no issues with damage or pitting even when I let the solution work for very long periods in excess of 12 hours (your results may vary depending on humidity). Only complaint...I would like to see this offered in pint or quart containers!
worked well for me
Used on a Mark X barreled action and a rifle barrel I had laying around. Be sure to apply evenly onto work pieces without overlapping. If a spot is missed you can get it on the next go round. I only ran four cycles on both projects and I got a very good deep satin black. Hint, if at all possible after the final cycle, the work pieces can be covered in used crankcase oil overnight. After which as much oil is wiped off as is possible. Place pieces in oven or other heating conveyance preheated to 250 degrees F. for 20 minutes. Remove and allow to cool somewhat. While still warm rub in a good wax that contains no abrasive. If forced to use kitchen oven be sure wife isn't home when attempting this.
GREAT PRODUCT
I have refinished several old beat up guns with this product and got great results every time. Tried pilkingtons {at 3 times the price} and was so horrified at the results that I sent it back. Belgain Blue gave me a dark brown color after 17 coats. I plan to strip this off and refinish with Brownells. Just follow the instructions and don't get in a hurry and you will get a great looking finish. Don't get impatient and let the chemical set too long on the gun. This could cause some really bad damage!
Works Wonderfully
I am amazed at how well this product works. I am consistantly getting incredibly deep black after only one or two cycles (though I'm doing a few more just in case). I thought rust bluing was going to take many more cycles to produce a good color but I've been very pleasantly surprised.
Good Results
This product works very well, even for the beginner. It takes time, patience and care but the results are great with minimal equipment. If you are in a hurry then don't start. The best advice I can give is follow the instructions explicitly and degrease, degrease and degrease again. The results will be no better than the time you put in preparing the metal to receive the chemical. There is no need to buy expensive degreasing chemicals as many household kitchen degreasing products will work. Trisodium phosphate (TSP) from the hardware store works, followed by a light scrubbing of common dish detergent solution and then clean water rinse. I recommend using distilled water. It is inexpensive, available at drug and grocery stores and will eliminate the risk of tap water contamination. Humidity is important to rust formation. I live on the east coast a few miles from the ocean so humidity in the summer is plentiful. Your weather station can give your local relative humidity or you may take a cold soda from the refrigerator, set it out where you plan to work and wait for moisture to condense on the surface. If in a few minutes water is running down the container then you probably have sufficient humidity.
