Reviews Summary
The GUNSMITH HAMMER HEADS & HANDLES have received mixed reviews, with users praising the weight and changeable heads while expressing concerns over quality issues like loose inserts and defective installations. Many agree that if the materials used, particularly for threaded heads, improved, it could significantly enhance the product's durability for serious use.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Product Quality
65%
Reviewers commonly noted a decline in quality compared to previous models, especially regarding the durability and construction of the heads. Issues such as loose inserts and the use of inferior materials like pot metal have been highlighted, leading to dissatisfaction among users.
Usability
50%
Many customers appreciate the size, weight, and versatility offered by the changeable heads. However, usability complaints arose due to defective installations and the hammer's tendency to rotate during use, which could lead to improper strikes.
Material Concerns
60%
The material quality of the threaded heads is a notable concern, with users suggesting that a transition to more durable materials like steel would significantly enhance the hammer's lifespan and efficacy, especially for professional use.
Defect Issues
40%
Several reviewers reported receiving defective products, such as handles that were installed off-center, which further diminished the overall customer experience. This has led some to consider alternatives rather than risk repeat issues.
Value for Money
45%
While some users find the product affordable, they are unwilling to compromise on quality. Many expressed that they would be willing to pay more for a version made with higher quality materials, indicating that value extends beyond just price.
5
Replacement head
The nylon head replacement is much more durable than the orange plastic (which is of unknown material, and I know that nylon is also a plastic) I had on another model.
4
fair value for price
brass head has a gap when screwed in and wooden handel can lossen but its a tool not a jewel
3
Lower quality than before
These are of less quality my previous ones. The first two lasted about 15 years with daily use before the pot metal head cracked or stretched. With these ones, I had to hammer down the nail holding the head to the handle to get the hammer face inserts to seat. Been using them for about a week and the inserts are already coming loose. I'll use them til they fail, but probably won't buy more,
3
Excellent Hammer...But.....
Very Nice little hammer, I especially like the changeable heads, the brass and nylon heads are quite useful, and the handle is plenty long so it can be cut down if needed. But, the threaded head is made of some type of pot-metal, and I have had two break from regular use - (see photo's) If Brownell's would make the threaded head from a more durable material, like steel, this little hammer could and would last a Smith a lifetime. I would be more than willing to pay twice the price for that improvement..... until then, consider this for light duty use.
2
Disappointing
Ordered two of these, one was with heads installed and one was w/out. I ordered the second one because the first one was defective and since it's only a few dollars I chose to order a replacement rather than go through a return hassle. Unfortunately, the second one was just as defective. The head is installed off center of the handle, like it's off-clocked by 15-20 degrees. The problem arises when using it as the striking of the intended object causes the hammer to want to rotate in the palm of your hand, turning the head of the hammer somewhat sideways, and risking hitting the object with the metal of the hammer and not the inserted plastic head. The hammer is the size and weight I want, and I already bought several replacement head inserts, so I'll probably wait a year or so and order another handle in hopes this defective lot has purged and the next lot was manufactured true.
