Product Spotlight: KAK K-Spec Upper
Introduction and Overview
Hey everyone, Caleb with Brownells here! Today, we're excited to bring you a closer look at an exclusive new product—the KAK K-Spec Upper Receiver. Brownells partnered with KAK to design this upper, giving it a range of features ideal for those looking to build or upgrade an AR-15. Let’s break down everything you get with this upper receiver, from the Pentacomp muzzle device to the robust M-LOK handguard. So, let’s dive in and explore each component, starting at the front.
Pentacomp Compensator Features
Starting at the muzzle, this upper receiver comes equipped with the Pentacomp, a compensator that serves as an effective muzzle device. It does an excellent job at reducing recoil and muzzle rise, helping keep your rifle steady and on target. There isn’t a lot of complexity to it—it’s simple and effective, doing exactly what it’s designed to do, which is to improve your shooting stability. 4150 Chrome-Lined Barrel Moving back from the muzzle, we get to the barrel, which is a 4150 chrome-lined barrel. This material is well-regarded for its durability and longevity, making it perfect for a high-performance rifle setup. The chrome lining also ensures excellent resistance to wear and tear, so this barrel is going to serve you well for the long haul.
M-LOK Handguard with 45-Degree Mounting
Attached to the barrel is a 15-inch M-LOK handguard that provides a lot of flexibility for accessory mounting. You’ve got M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions, as well as at 45-degree angles, giving you plenty of real estate for any accessories you might want to attach. Whether you’re adding a foregrip, flashlight, or other gear, the options are endless as long as they’re compatible with M-LOK.
Anti-Rotation Tabs and Barrel Nut
Next up, let’s talk about the handguard attachment. The handguard is mounted with a strong barrel nut system that includes beefy steel blocks for extra durability and stability. KAK designed this upper with anti-rotation tabs, ensuring that everything stays aligned and secure, even during heavy use. Additionally, the top rail aligns perfectly with the upper receiver rail, so you’ll have a smooth, continuous rail for mounting optics or other top-rail accessories. Upper Receiver Details (7075 Anodized) The upper receiver itself is made to mil-spec standards from 7075 anodized aluminum. It’s durable and has been hard coat anodized, providing a solid, wear-resistant finish that’s ready to handle tough conditions. It includes all the standard mil-spec components, such as a dust cover and forward assist, which add functionality and reliability to the setup.
Charging Handle with Extended Latch
Moving to the internals, we start with the charging handle. While it’s not an ambidextrous model, it does come with an extended latch, making it easier to manipulate, especially if you’re using optics that might block access to a standard charging handle. This extended latch provides a nice level of convenience for quick, reliable operation.
K-Spec Bolt Carrier Group Overview
This upper receiver also includes the KAK K-Spec Bolt Carrier Group. Without diving too deep into the details (we have a dedicated video for that), this BCG features a sand cutter rail design to help keep the action free from dirt and debris. It also has vent holes on the bottom for improved gas management, especially useful if you’re running a suppressed setup. The bolt itself is magnetic particle inspected and made from 9310 steel for added durability and strength.
