Howa Bolt Gun Range Report

Today

Putting the Howa 1500 Precision Build to the Test

After completing the build, it's time to find out how the finished rifle performs on the range. In this Brownells Tech Tip, Caleb takes the custom Howa 1500 chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor to the Brownells range to evaluate its performance from 300 to 500 yards.

Built around the Grayboe Universal Mini Chassis, Athlon Cronus BTR Gen 2 optic, and the factory Howa barrel and trigger, the rifle demonstrates just how capable a thoughtfully assembled precision rifle can be.

Skipping Straight to Distance

Rather than beginning at 100 yards, Caleb starts at 300 because the rifle already has a preliminary zero. Using a Kestrel loaded with Applied Ballistics, he calculates the necessary elevation holds and chooses to use the reticle instead of dialing adjustments.

For the 300-yard target, the ballistic solution calls for approximately 1.1 mils of elevation, making it a straightforward hold using the scope's reticle.

Making First-Round Hits

The first shots at 300 yards land very close to the intended point of impact, confirming both the zero and the ballistic data. Minor windage observations are noted, but the rifle is already performing well enough to continue moving farther downrange.

With confidence established, the next stop is the 400-yard steel.

Extending to 400 and 500 Yards

At 400 yards, Caleb uses a 2.0 mil hold and quickly confirms solid impacts on steel. The combination of the factory Howa barrel and quality optic provides consistent shot placement, making the transition to 500 yards an easy next step.

For the 500-yard targets, the ballistic solution indicates a hold of approximately 2.9 mils. After adjusting both parallax and magnification, Caleb begins engaging steel at the far end of the range.

Managing Wind and Holdovers

As the shooting continues, a light crosswind develops across the range. Rather than making immediate scope adjustments, Caleb simply refines his hold to compensate for the changing conditions.

This demonstrates one of the major advantages of learning to use a modern mil-based reticle. Small corrections for wind and elevation can be made quickly without touching the turrets, allowing fast follow-up shots on multiple targets.

The session also highlights the importance of proper parallax adjustment, especially when shooting at extended distances where small aiming errors become much more noticeable.

Evaluating the Completed Rifle

By the end of the range session, the rifle is consistently ringing steel at 500 yards with only minor corrections for wind. Caleb is particularly impressed with the performance of the Grayboe Universal Mini Chassis, which provides the rigidity and consistency expected from an aluminum chassis system while maintaining the feel of a traditional rifle stock.

The Athlon Cronus BTR Gen 2 optic also performs well, offering a clear sight picture, repeatable holds, and plenty of magnification for engaging distant targets.

A Strong Foundation for a Precision Rifle

One of the biggest takeaways from this build is that the factory Howa 1500 barreled action remains an outstanding starting point for a custom precision rifle. The factory barrel and two-stage trigger deliver excellent accuracy, allowing shooters to focus their upgrades on the stock, optic, and accessories.

Combined with the modular flexibility of the Grayboe Universal Mini Chassis, this setup creates a versatile rifle capable of everything from recreational target shooting to practical long-range competition.

If you're planning your own precision rifle build, this project demonstrates how quality components, proper setup, and solid shooting fundamentals can produce excellent results without requiring a complete custom rifle from the ground up.
