So far so good.
Just applied it to my Savage FV12. Painted everything in oven cure Flat Dark Earth. I used 70 grit AO to prep everything and degreased with acetone. Follow the directions that come with the product and you should be good to go. I coated everyting (action, barrel, rings, rail, bolt body, handle, front and rear bolt baffles, bipod, mono pod, even the hand grip for my McRee stock) except the bolt face and the sear. I used Brownell's high temp masking tape and it too worked great. If anything gets on the the finish, any gun cleaner (I've been using Gun Scrubber) and it wipes right off. It even smoothed up the action. I sprayed the bolt lugs and raceways and now it's like butter with ZERO lube on it. My only complaint is that the colors shown on NIC's website don't look anything like the real product. Turns out that the oven cure FDE and the air cure Coyote Tan look almost identical.
Everyone is impressed my guns finish
Follow the directions, don't cut any corners and you and your friends will be impressed.Paint prep is always 99% of a nice finish.
Detail needed to apply-but great product
I bought this and the Graphite Black Cerakote. Make SURE you are spraying a WET coat with your airbrush, or touch-up gun. If applied properly, you'll see a wet spot, it will quickly dry as you go along coating the part. My first batch I had too little material coming out, which dried in the air on the way to the part. It scratched right off with my nail. When applied propperly, it won't scratch off. It's amazing. I almost gave up and went Durakote because they say its easier to apply. Cerakote is worth the trial and error. PS: use a Chlorine Free Brake cleaner (instantly disolving kind) to save money in the degreasing stage. It works JUST FINE!
Graphite Black
I bought this color trying to find best match for a new Midwest industries rail I was using on a new build ... the rail had all of the T markings and was very well finished. Long story short the graphite Black turned out to be a little lighter than I hoped .. still black, but leaning toward the gray a bit. It matched the Magpul UBR stock I was using almost perfectly. Mixed at 18:1 The 4 star rating was more regarding the color match (for Me) ... the cerakote products themselves are excellent and definitely get a general 5 stars.
Good coating, wrong color
The product is great quality, however, for me it didn't match Magpul FDE. I tried coating twice with different hardener ratio and both times it's a little darker than Magpul FDE, not a huge deal but it is noticeable. Everything else I'm very happy with. It went on great, it's nice and smooth, the rifle I did went right back together with little to no tolerance changes. In fact I built it up around the take-down pin lugs and now the receivers match together a lot tighter. Great stuff. Just not quite the right color. 4.5/5
