What is the BROWNELLS - 30mm Scope Ring Alignment Lap?

Helps prevent dinged and damaged scope tubes by removing high spots to quickly true misaligned or out-of-round scope rings so they're perfectly in line. Also works to turn-in and rough align rotary dovetail rings. Dual-handles with multiple, transverse, lapping compound grooves give complete control and fast results. Includes lapping compound.

SPECS: Mild steel, in-the-white. 12" (30cm) long, 1" (2.5cm) or 30mm (1.187") dia. Includes (2) plastic handles and instructions.

Everyone should have one of these!
I don't think you can get any better quality in a lapping tool. This thing is solid steel and very heavy duty. The multiple handle attachment points are very nice as well. This item comes with the 800 grit lapping compound which worked very well but took awhile to get full 80% contact on the rings. I would recommend purchasing the 600 grit compound separately to speed the process up a little bit or buy an extra six pack of beer. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase and will be purchasing a 1" model to go with this one.... and some extra 600 grit compound.

A better product than cheaper versions
Unlike cheaper versions from other suppliers, this lap has grooves for carrying lapping compound. It also has multiple handle attachment points, which is important when working rings that are very close together (or very far apart), or when the structure of the firearm only allows access from certain positions. A few quick passes will let you know whether you're close ... and to keep going ... or you're not, in which case you may need a reamer (such as the one from Clymer) or perhaps a new set of rings.

OK, but some handle issues
The bar appears to be fairly consistent in dimensions, just a smidge under 30mm. The handles leave a bit to be desired. The allthread is not straight on one, and it backed out of the handle. Easily fixed with a bit of epoxy, but still-I haven’t even used it yet.

30MM lapping bar
I used this 30 MM lapping bar for the rings on a new NF 8X32. It worked great. at start I had .020 gap on both sides of the rings with hard points on rear of both sets. After lapping, I had over 80% contact with tube and just onder .010 gap at ring split lines. I now have a 1" lapping bar to go with this one.

disappointed...
it's just a piece of 1 3/16 raw cold rolled bar. The lapping surface is not machined. Mine spec'd out at 30.06>30.12 I didnt even bother to check the run out. I measured all my 30mm scopes and they were all 29.95 and mounted in Mark4 steel rings that this bar will never touch
