CLYMER - Shotgun Barrel Facer, (no pilot)

Made quick work of the muzzle and gave a nice clean and square finish. Just a touch of quick blue and it was done! Easy peasy

I was struggling with how to square up the end of my shotgun barrel after I cut it back to 18 5/8" with a hacksaw. Using a file and a machinist's square just wasn't cutting it (literally). I read an article online about this tool and decided to give it a try. I purchased the tool and the separate 12 gauge bronze pilot bushing. After assembling the bushing to the facing tool, I chucked it up in my DeWalt cordless hand drill and applied plenty of cutting oil to the tool and barrel. It literally took me minutes to face the barrel! Just make sure you use plenty of cutting oil (I used 3 in 1). I also had a skip mark in the bluing of the barrel where the hacksaw jumped out the cut. I ended up facing the end of the barrel another 1/8" further back to eliminate this mark. I went further than simply squaring up the barrel. When finished, the overall length of the barrel was exactly 18 3/8" when measured from the bolt face to the tip of the barrel with a wooden dowel. Legal length with a perfectly faced barrel. Couldn't be happier!

I have been cutting down barrels to make coach guns or handier shotguns for wild bunch use...this tool saves a lot of time in squaring up the barrel. Still have to deburr the inside edges of the barrel to get the pilot to fit right...but this is no problem...then a little bluing solution and all is good. Now I wish I could find a 10 gauge pilot. ....
