What is the BROWNELLS - 1911 STOCK TAPS?
1911 STOCK TAPS

These Brownells high speed steel taps are for tapping/ chasing pre-existing threads in 1911 frames. The 0.236”-60 TPI tap is for tapping frames so that bushings can thread into the frame. The 0.150”-50 TPI tap is for tapping the actual bushings for the grip screws.


Recommended tap drill sizes:

0.150”-50 TPI = #30 drill (0.1285”)

0.236”-60 TPI = 7/32” drill (0.2188”)

1911 grip screw (.150-50) tap
A must have in your box. I take my guns apart after a match. Every once in a while, grips screws get worn out. I will use this tap to clean up the grip bushings. It works great. Also works on other handguns that use .150 x 50 tpi. A friend has a S&W performance center 22 target pistol. He purchased new grips and screws. The screws were a different size. One broke off. I removed the broken screw and tried a 1911 grip screw in an undamaged hole. It fit perfect. Using the old screws and cleaning up the damaged hole with this tap was an easy repair.

1911 grip screw bushing repaired
Thought grip screw bushing thread was damged (wouldn't tighten); this tap easily cleaned the thread -- all ok now.

Perfect
Only have used it as a thread chaser, but works great for cleaning after blasting or painting. Great for using after bushing removal to ensure threads are straight. Pricey but way better than a damaged frame.
