Affordable Upgrades That Make a Ruger 10/22 Better

The Ruger 10/22 has earned its reputation as one of the most popular rimfire rifles ever made. It is reliable, easy to maintain, and supported by one of the largest aftermarket parts selections in the firearms industry.

In this Tech Tip, Caleb walks through several affordable upgrades that can improve the performance, reliability, and overall shooting experience of a Ruger 10/22 or a BRN-22 build. While Volquartsen is known for premium custom rifles, many of their individual components offer excellent value without requiring a complete rifle upgrade.

Recoil Buffer: A Simple Quality-of-Life Improvement

One of the easiest upgrades to install is a recoil buffer. The factory Ruger buffer pin is steel, which means the bolt impacts metal every time it reaches the rear of its travel.

A Volquartsen recoil buffer uses a softer material that helps absorb some of that impact. The result is a quieter cycling action, especially when shooting suppressed, and slightly reduced wear on internal components.

This is not a mandatory upgrade, but it is an inexpensive way to make a rifle feel smoother and more refined.

Automatic Bolt Release for Faster Operation

Owners of older Ruger 10/22 rifles are familiar with the factory bolt release system. Locking the bolt open is straightforward, but releasing it often requires an awkward sequence of movements.

An automatic bolt release eliminates that issue by allowing the shooter to simply pull back and release the bolt. The action can then be operated using a simple slingshot method.

This upgrade is particularly beneficial for competition shooters, youth shooters, and anyone who wants a more user-friendly rifle.

Extended Magazine Release

The factory magazine release on many older Ruger 10/22 rifles is relatively small and sits close to the stock.

An extended magazine release provides a larger contact surface, making magazine changes faster and easier. While the modification is simple, it noticeably improves handling during training, competition, and recreational shooting.

For shooters who frequently perform reloads, this is one of the most practical upgrades available.

Upgraded Extractors Improve Reliability

Rimfire ammunition can be inconsistent, and extraction problems are among the most common issues encountered with .22 LR rifles.

Volquartsen extractors are manufactured with improved geometry and sharper engagement surfaces. This allows the extractor to maintain a stronger grip on the cartridge rim, especially when dealing with dirty chambers or stubborn live rounds.

A quality extractor upgrade can significantly improve reliability and reduce stoppages during extended shooting sessions.

A Better Firing Pin for Consistent Ignition

Another worthwhile internal upgrade is the firing pin.

Volquartsen firing pins are manufactured from improved materials and held to tighter tolerances than many factory components. The result is more consistent rim strikes and improved ignition reliability.

Because rimfire ammunition varies in quality, improving firing pin performance can help reduce misfires and improve overall confidence in the rifle.

Trigger Improvements Without Buying a Complete Trigger Group

One of the most effective ways to improve a Ruger 10/22 is through trigger work. Caleb discusses the Volquartsen TG2000 trigger group, a premium assembly known for its excellent trigger pull and performance.

While the complete TG2000 assembly represents a larger investment, shooters do not necessarily need to purchase the entire unit to see significant improvements.

Many of the key performance gains come from the hammer, sear, and trigger components. These individual parts can be installed into a factory trigger housing, providing many of the benefits of the TG2000 at a lower cost.

Building a Better Rimfire Rifle

The beauty of the Ruger 10/22 platform is its flexibility. Shooters can start with simple upgrades and gradually improve performance as their needs evolve.

Components such as recoil buffers, bolt releases, magazine releases, extractors, firing pins, and trigger parts provide measurable improvements without requiring a complete custom rifle build.

For shooters looking to get more from their Ruger 10/22 or BRN-22, these upgrades represent some of the best values available in the rimfire aftermarket.
