LMT MARS-H .308 Win. Designated Marksman Rifle

Caleb's LMT MARS-H .308 Setup

After spending five days in a Basic Sniper Course and firing approximately 500 rounds, Caleb has had plenty of time behind his LMT MARS-H .308.

Rather than building an excessively long precision rifle, Caleb wanted a compact .308 setup that could still perform at distance. The result is an LMT MARS-H with a 16-inch barrel, Nightforce NX8 optic, SureFire suppressor system, MDT bipod, and a carefully selected collection of supporting components.

Here's a closer look at the complete setup and how it performed during the course.

Why a 16-Inch .308?

Caleb wanted the rifle chambered in a traditional, widely used cartridge, which led him to .308 Winchester.

He also wanted to keep the overall package relatively compact. Instead of selecting a longer barrel, he chose a 16-inch LMT barrel.

Despite the shorter barrel, the rifle still provided the performance he needed at the Brownells Big Springs Range. Caleb used the rifle out to 500 yards during the Basic Sniper Course and found the ballistic correction required at that distance was less than he initially expected.

Over the course of the week, he fired approximately 500 rounds of Hornady 168-grain ELD Match ammunition through the rifle and reported excellent overall performance.

SureFire Muzzle Brake and SOCOM 762 RC2

At the muzzle, Caleb uses a SureFire .30 caliber muzzle brake.

The goal is not simply reducing felt recoil. Reducing movement helps the shooter stay behind the optic, observe the target, and get back on target efficiently for follow-up shots.

The muzzle brake also provides the mounting interface for the SureFire SOCOM 762 RC2 suppressor used during the course.

Caleb paired the suppressor with a Cole-TAC suppressor cover. The cover worked well at managing heat, although extended shooting caused it to gradually move forward as the suppressor became hot.

ARCA Rail and MDT Bipod

Supporting the front of the rifle is an Ultradyne ARCA rail.

Caleb selected the rail because it provides useful mounting length without adding excessive weight. The ventilated design also helps keep the system relatively streamlined.

Attached to the ARCA rail is an MDT bipod. It's an expensive piece of equipment, but after using it throughout the Basic Sniper Course, Caleb came away impressed with its performance.

For a rifle intended to be fired from a variety of supported positions, the combination of an ARCA mounting system and a highly adjustable bipod provided considerable flexibility.

Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x Optic

The primary optic is a Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x mounted in a SPUHR QD mount.

For shooting to 500 yards, Caleb found the 20x maximum magnification provided everything he needed, including enough resolution to engage six-inch steel plates at the far end of the Brownells range.

The SPUHR mount also incorporates a bubble level positioned where Caleb can see it in his peripheral vision. That proved particularly useful when shooting from both sides of the rifle because he could monitor rifle cant without relying on a level mounted exclusively to one side.

Using a Red Dot for Target Transitions

A secondary Aimpoint ACRO is mounted above the primary optic.

Although the red dot is zeroed, Caleb primarily uses it as a target acquisition tool. When transitioning between targets while the Nightforce is at higher magnification, he can locate the next target through the red dot and then return directly to the magnified optic.

That eliminates the need to reduce magnification, locate the next target, and then increase magnification again.

For rapid target transitions during the Basic Sniper Course, this setup provided a simple and efficient solution.

Controls and Trigger

The rifle retains several factory LMT components, including the bolt carrier group, bolt, iron sights, and ambidextrous charging handle.

Caleb also added several Forward Controls Design components, including an ambidextrous selector, .308 magazine catch button, trigger guard, and A5-length castle nut.

The trigger is a Geissele SSA-E X with the Lightning Bow. Caleb has strong opinions about this particular trigger and considers it his preferred option for AR-pattern rifles, including large-frame .308 platforms.

Grip and Buffer System

For the grip, Caleb chose a Magpul K2+.

He previously used a Die Free Co. Kung Fu Grip but prefers a larger grip on heavier rifles because the additional surface area gives him more to hold onto during manipulations and positional shooting.

The LMT MARS-H also differs from many DPMS-pattern .308 rifles in its buffer system. Caleb's rifle uses an A5-length receiver extension with a standard AR-15-length carbine buffer.

His specific setup uses a Sons of Liberty Gun Works A5 receiver extension, Forward Controls Design A5-length castle nut, and Bravo Company QD end plate.

B5 Systems Stock and Anarchy Outdoors Cheek Pad

At the rear of the rifle is a B5 Systems adjustable precision-style stock.

Caleb added an Anarchy Outdoors universal foam cheek pad to improve comfort and consistency behind the magnified optic. He has been adding these pads to many of his scoped rifles because they provide a simple way to improve the cheek interface.

Caleb does note that he selected the version of the B5 stock with the shorter cheek area. Given his preferred length of pull, the longer version would have positioned his cheek support slightly farther forward.

The current setup still works well enough that he has continued using it.

KG GunKote Finish

The rifle's painted appearance comes from KG GunKote.

Rather than applying a temporary spray finish over the assembled rifle, Caleb completely disassembled the firearm, degreased the components, airbrushed the finish onto the parts, baked the coating, and then reassembled the rifle.

The result is a durable finish that gives the rifle its distinctive appearance while maintaining the functionality of the individual components.

Final Thoughts

Caleb's LMT MARS-H is a good example of building a rifle around actual use rather than simply assembling a collection of premium components.

The 16-inch .308 configuration keeps the rifle relatively compact, while the Nightforce NX8, SPUHR mount, MDT bipod, ARCA rail, SureFire suppressor system, and supporting components give Caleb the features he needed during the Basic Sniper Course.

After approximately 500 rounds of Hornady 168-grain ELD Match and multiple days of training, the setup performed well and gave Caleb a better understanding of which components genuinely contributed to the rifle's performance.

Most importantly, every component has a purpose. That's ultimately what matters when setting up a rifle for serious use.
