What is the HORNADY - 45 Caliber Bullet Feeder Die?

HORNADY BULLET FEEDER PISTOL DIES

Use these Lock-N-Load Bullet Feeder Pistol Dies with the Lock-N-Load Bullet Feeder to speed your reloading process so you can spend more time at the range or in the field. Tube and collet design holds the bullet securely in the die until a fresh case contacts the collet for a smooth work flow. The bullet feeder die is case activated which means the bullet will only feed upon contact with a case.

Solid steel construction ensures years of reloading. No special tools required, and each die is threaded in the 7⁄8"-14 industry standard.

Really works well.
I recently began using a Hornady Bullet Feeder Pistol Die for 44 mag/ 44 special. It takes a while to get the adjustment of the die set. I bought the die by itself, and it came with no instructions. Once I figured out how it should be adjusted, it worked well. I do not have a bullet feeder, so I inserted a 5/8 od plastic tube in the top and dropped bullets in. I discovered that occasionally, a bullet would fall out of the bottom of the die while dropping them into the tube. I stopped this by running a case up into the die while I was loading bullets into the tube. The die never failed to drop a bullet into the case, and it did not it did not drop a bullet when it was not supposed to. The die came with a powder feed tube/case mouth expander for use in a powder measure. If I could change the die, I would prefer to have it partially seat the bullet. It simply drops the bullet in the case mouth where gravity holds it in place. If the shell plate turns too quickly the bullet can fall out of the case or lean over, and will have to be straightened before it can enter the seating die. If the die had partially seated the bullet, I would have given it five stars. Bottom line: Using the die really increased my reloading speed, even taking into consideration the time I spent loading bullets in the tube. I recommend this product.

Does not work with plated bullets
I purchased this to use on my LNL press with the LNL bullet feeder. Does it work with FMJ bullets, most of the time. Does it work with plated bullets? No... I have loaded less than 100 rounds with this die in 9mm and have broken 4 bushings. I set it up exactly per the directions, and I even called Hornady (multiple times to get help and order more parts...). They said I was doing everything right, but said they don't recommend using plated or cast bullets due to the variance in diameter. I understand that, but at the same time, who is going to be shooting a bullet that cost twice as much when you have other options? Other manufacturers have worked out this problem (allegedly) and I feel like Hornady missed the boat on this one. Most all of my reloading equipment is Hornady, and I love the company, but this one is one I wish I could send back...
