What is the SINCLAIR INTERNATIONAL - Sinclair Chamber Length Gage?

SINCLAIR CHAMBER LENGTH GAGES

The Sinclair Chamber Length Gauges are designed so the handloader can determine the true length of his rifle's chamber when measuring from the bolt face to the end of the chamber's neck. This measurement will tell you how much excess case length your chamber may have over published trim lengths in reloading handbooks. The Sinclair Gauges are inserted into a fired, unprimed shortened case and then chambered into your rifle. The insert pushes back into the case when it contacts the end of your chamber. You then extract the case and measure the overall length. The gauge is made of 12L14 soft steel so it will not damage your chamber. Step-by-step instructions accompany each gauge. The gauges can be used over and over again. The differences between published trim lengths and the actual length of your chamber can be quite significant. You could be over trimming your cases by .030 inch or more. NOTE: The 22 caliber gauge will not work on thin-necked cases such as the 22 Hornet, 218 Bee, or cartridges based on these cases. The 30 caliber gauge will not work on the 30-30 Winchester. None of the gauges listed will work on tight-necked chambers except for the G-243T. Should not be used in handguns, semi automatic rifles, lever actions rifles and pump action rifles.

Chamber gages
These gages provide a consistent measurement of chamber depth. Using bullets doesn't yield consistency because there are such differences in ogive taper, especially in the newer high BC bullets with hybrid ogive tapers.

Essential Tool for Kowing your Chamber
This product is really easy to use. Use a case for your rifle and trim away 80% of the case neck to make room for the Gage and provide adequate free space. Use your press to do the initially seating of the Gage into the modified case. I place the modified case in the shellholder and place the Gage on top of case neck, and then I put a piece of wood on the underside of the top of the press (no die inserted) and gradually raise the ram pushing the plug into the case. Use your calipers to measure .. leave the Gage protroding a little longer (+0.020") than SAAMI. Insert the cartridge and close the bolt. When you extract the modified case inspect to see if there is any free space between the bottom of the Gage and top of Case Neck. If not then may need to trim more off the top of the case neck and repeat. To extract the gage use a normal drill bit and drill out/through primer pocket and then insert a metal rod or even drill bit into the case and use hammer to tap the Gage out of the mouth of case. Last point: Make sure your chamber is clean or else you could get a false reading. If there is debris or carbon ring this will prematurely stop the Gage from making contact with the end of the chamber.

Great for gauging chamber neck length
I purchased 5 of these different cal. chamber length gauges. They work well. I don't understand the review that the gauge wasn't tight enough to hold position on a sized case that had been shortened. I had no problem with that. In fact it was really tight on a 17 Rem case. I did bore out the primer pocket so a long skinny punch could be used to remove it from neck of case. Gives you a knowledge of how much extra length you have before needing to trim cases. Something that is right at the max length or even a little over lets you know if it's a problem or not.
