Just okay
I had some constructive criticism, but they blocked me from Instagram which is super lame. Firing pin safety spring destroyed itself in 100 shots. Really bad machine marks on the receiver. Worst I've I ever seen out of any firearm manufacturer from any time period or place. Just get an HK.
Bought excited, returned dissapointed.
I purchased the 10.4 heavy upper assy. The end Oct. of last year and finally now have been able to shoot it. Since shooting I have had multiple issue of rims being ripped off multiple brands of ammo and having to punch out the fired brass with a cleaning rod. Turns out a chamber issue was the culprit. After reaching out to Brownells I had one of two options. Send my upper back and wait an unknown time for more upper assemblies to be restocked even though barrels and stripped uppers and even whole part kits are in stock. Or a gift card... needless to say im disappointed with the QC and the remedy to fix the problem. I would have been fine with having an upper gone for a couple of weeks and a barrel replaced and then QC checked and then returned once everything was good but thats not an option.
Disappointing fit and finish
I purchased a BRN-4 upper to build a second 416-style firearm after I had made one with the genuine parts kits that were previously available. The upper I received functioned perfectly and had a high degree of parts interchangeability with my genuine HK upper. The fit and finish, however, leave a lot to be desired. Tool chatter marks cover the entire upper, worse than any blem upper I've ever purchased, and this was a full-price unit. It works well and uses the proven HK piston system, so I cannot complain about that, but the poor finish quality is downright embarrassing for an upper that costs more than twice as much as a complete basic DI AR. I'm going to keep it, just because I know I'm going to beat the heck out of it anyway, but I would not have purchased it if I had known how bad the upper receiver had been machined. The unit even includes a shim to fit the handguard because of the extreme slop in the cutout, something I have never seen needed with genuine HK uppers. Good of them to include it, but it's a shame the upper needs it. Brownells usually has products that are great, and this is the first time I'm been this disappointed by one of their house brand products, but I am definitely disappointed in this one.
If you want an HK416 type upper, there aren't many options, and this is the most affordable of them. Unless you are dead set on the HK system, I would strongly recommend considering other uppers like the BRN-180 (which is excellent) if you are looking for a short-stroke piston upper, or one of the many other piston options on the market.
Machine marks everywhere
I didn’t expect a perfect gun compared to the MR556 but it looks like this thing was machined with a cheese grater! The amount of machining marks for a $1,200 receiver is crazy!
