Should be labeled Gloss Gunmetal Purple
Ordered this after reading other stories of peoples successes with this product, and since I offer only coating finishes in my shop, and not bluing, I thought this would be a great option for my customers that want a traditional glossy blued look. First thing I did was take a Kimber Ultra CDP-II compact 1911 (aluminum frame, needed something better than the horrible KimPro-II factory junk) and abrasive blasted the frame with 120 grit alum-oxide at 45 psi, fully degreased with acetone and gassed out in oven at 140 degrees, then misted on a few coats of K-Phos. When I began applying the finish, I noticed how thin it was, extremely thin. It was covering nicely, but had a weird "greenish-purple" hue to it depending on how the light was hitting it. I paid no attention, thinking that it would darken properly after curing. After I baked the frame, then let it cool, the frame had a very purplish hue to it... If you saw it in low light, it looked wonderful. But viewing it in bright light shown the purple horribly. I was pleased by how glassy-smooth the finish was, and was so thin that I didn't have any problems with pins or slide rails being too tight... the color just didn't work. After doing some research, I found that I may have overcooked it, or baked at too high of a temp... I am going to give this another try before condemning it altogether. Also, I do this for a living, and apply mostly Cerakote H series in my shop, and have used most every other product out there - so I'm no stranger to this process. Another idea I am going to try, is to add a little gloss black GunKote to this to perhaps darken out the green/purple sheen. Remember those Ford "Mystic" Cobras that were made in the late 90's? Remember the "Mystic" paint that changed colors depending on the light, going from purple, to green, to blue... That reminds me of this finish!!
