The Brownells XM177 Flash Hider & Grenade Ring is the appropriate reproduction piece for your Retro carbine build. This flash hider mirrors the original device's exterior dimensions, as well as flash hider cuts and grenade ring. The XM177 Flash Hider fits 1/2-28 threads, is machined from 8620L steel and has a black oxide finish. Flash Hider overall length is 4.335". With the grenade ring, the total length is 4.45".

Not just for AR

I got a similar copy of the XM 177 flash hider back in the early 80's but did not come with the ring. It is nice but nowhere near the Brownells version in terms of overall quality and finish. Looks awesome with my vintage Colt Commando but equally outstanding with other guns. Its a nostalgic jewel with affordable price tag. Highly recommended.

Great retro part!

Bought this for my XM retro build. Finish on the flash hider was flawless. Installed with no problem. Only two issues. The grenade ring is not parkerized like the hider. It appears to be blued and the finish is a little shiny. Also, the wrench flats on the hider are a little narrow and I had a hard time fitting any wrench between the hider and grenade ring. Other than these two minor issues I'm very happy with this hider. And it's about half the price of other offerings out there.

Does what its supposed to

Ordered this flash hider to pin and weld on a 12.5 barrel. With the grenade ring it makes the overall length just a bit over 16.5 inches, without the grenade ring its 16.25 inches. It does exactly what its supposed to. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was caked in some sort of rust/dirt. After a soak in CLP it more or less cleaned up but it was somewhat surprising/concerning/off-putting to receive a new part in such condition. Pictures are attached. Overall Im happy with it but Brownells probably needs to check their parts better before they ship them out.

Ok overall

Machining and fit were great, but the part arrived in a plastic bag with surface rust. A little bit of elbow grease, rem oil, and a light scrub with a brass brush and all seemed to wipe off, but I don't think this part should have had any rust on it from the factory. Would recommend, but advise you to be ready to do some mild cleanup. It will work with any 1/2" by 28 threaded barrel.

the finish on the one that I received was fine - not shiny blue, but more of a grey parkerized - looks just fine - it does seem a bit costly for as simple as it is -

For those unable to do math or understand the legalities of SBRs, be sure you understand what this product will do or not do for your build in terms of barrel length. If you can't, then the failure is with you and not this product. With that being said, I have a registered SBR and this was what I needed to complete my pseudo XM177E2 clone. Not quite clone-correct (A2 lower vs. A1 lower and some other parts) but close enough for me. Finish is as others stated, a bit too shiny but not a deal breaker.
