Does not fit Savage 10 Ashbury Precision
First off, the rail is terrific. Steel, perfect level, four screws included (torx head). BUT - be careful if you have a Savage 10 Ashbury Precision. This rail extends an inch or so forward of the front screws and is not high enough to clear the Ashbury handguard. Just wanted to warn any Ashbury owners.
Simply the best
Chose this base for a custom build (Remington 700 short action in .308, Shilen short-chambered Remington stainless barrel, heavy #7 contour, 25", Accuracy International AICS 1.5 stock), Brownell's picatinny rings, Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44 optics). I truly don't think I could've chosed a better-fitting base. Comes with 6-48 Torx screws, however I usually drill out and install 8-40 screws in my rifles, but since this base has it's own recoil lug that drops down and contacts the front of the cartridge window, I don't think even the heaviest scope will knock it off - I left it at 6-48. The base has a lightening cut down the middle of the "rails", but since this base is made out of tough steel, it's still quite heavy- probably not the best base to choose for a lightweight or mountain rifle. The finish is a matte black oxide finish (or similar) and is extremely tough. I accidentally scraped it while removing release agent from my rifle, didn't even put a ding in it. I have used Badger Ordnance bases in the Army, as well as Leupold Mark 4 bases on other builds, but this Nightforce is my favorite, and will be all I use from now on. Worth every penny.
Best base on the market
Anyone that complains that these bases have to be modified to fit a Remington 700 in a magnum has not done their research. Nightforce does offer a 700 base with 8-40 screws. It is called the HS/700 base. A simple call to NF or reading passed the header in the listing would make it clear. I use these bases exclusively on my 6-48 Remington 700 rifles. They have never failed me whether or not I have bedded them. They are bullet proof and absolutely machined to the tightest tolerances. Many of my rifles that I have checked base screw hole alignment have required next to zero windage adjustment with Nightforce scopes, rings, and bases. Thank you Brownells for carrying such high quality components for us.
Great value
Purchased this from Brownells a while back. I needed more elevation for my Leupold mk4 MR. I am very pleased with this product. It is built quite heavy and works great with the Leupold MK4 rings. As I build more rifles I will use these bases again.
Screws
Previous review is correct, People often buy NightForce to mount on heavy recoiling long range rifles. (like my Remington in .338 Lapua) These rifles will often have 8 X 40 mount screws but this base is machined for a lighter screw. You will have to re-drill/machine this base to use it on a heavy recoiling rifle with 8 X 40 mounting holes
A+ if rifle tapped for right screw
This base is designed to never move once mounted. Just make sure your rifle isn't tapped for 8X40 screws like a lot of magnums are. The reason I say this is because you'll be redrilling the mount out and finding larger screws to fit like I am. If Nightforce would tell you the screw size, I never would have ordered this mount for my 300RUM custom made rifle.
