Works well if you know how to use it.
As a gunsmith who does restorations I was hesitent to trust Brownell's Silver Solder Black given the previous reviews. I can confirm that this works but you need to know what you are doing and what material you are working with. When doing a resotration on a 1922 double-barrel Savage I confirmed it had the original silver solder and removed the surface oxidation with 3000 grit sandpaper (not simply just the steel wool the directions claim). Then removed all grease with acetone (wiping one direction and not reusing patches), apply, wait 30-60 seconds, rinse with distilled water, blow dry with compressor, repeat. Either the other reviews got a bad batch or they were not actually working with silver solder.
Would you recommend this?
Yes, I would recommend to a friend
Of questionable value
I tried this on a part that had been blued a few days prior and had very limited success, it did discolor the surrounding blue also. The instructions say to use it immediately after bluing, prior to oiling the part and I will try that, but in my view, a "touchup' product should work anytime without damage to the surrounding finish.
Silver Solder Black Not Working
Brownells silver solder black does not work as advertised. I followed the directions on the bottle and it did turn the silver solder any color at all. Brownells need to stop selling this product.
Silver Solder Black
Does not work....did not turn the silver solder black
Brownells Siver Solder Black
Purchased Brownells Silver Solder Black in order to match the silver solder on an old savage combination rifle with the restored bluing on the barrel. I thouroughly degreased the entire barrel and followed the instructions on the label. After several 30 second cycles, the silver solder never changed color. This item does not qualify for a refund, so I would strongly urge anyone thinking of purchasing it to rather go with a product such as Novacan Black Patina or another viable substitute. Trust me, the reviews are accurate, do not waste your time and money on this product.
No good
This stuff does not work on silver solder at all, im a proffesional full time gunsmith. Put it on discolors the silver let sit and wipes rite off. This is the same prob i had with their oxspho blue, it used to be fantastic stuff but i beleive due to epa regulations they were forced to change their formulas. Sorry but no more brownells chemicals for me.
