SERIOUS QUALITY PROBLEM at Winchester
Ordered 1k rds and received them quickly. Due to warnings here and on the IAA forum, I opened a random box of 50 and dropped each round into a chamber gauge; seven (7) rounds failed to chamber. I tried a 2nd random box, another 7 failed. It turns out that between one to three "globs" of bullet sealant was dripped onto the rounds that failed to chamber... most at the bullet/mouth junction, some on the case body, some all over. I hand-tested all 1,000 rounds and found over 110 which didn't chamber. The "best" box of 50 only had 2 bad rounds, the worst had 12. The average was 6 to 7 rounds per box of 50 that would not chamber. The sealant required a razor knife to scrape off. Once removed, all but 3 rounds chambered correctly - those 3 had the bullet seated off-center, creating a buldge to one side. Running them thru a Lee Carbide Pistol Crimp die cured that problem. The ammo shot well -once free of excess sealant globs- from both a Sig M17 and M18; data for 10 rounds from each at 4,200+ feet MSL with 30% RH: M17 Sig Pistol (4.7" Bbl): MVa=1,343.4fps w/9.0fps SD. M18 Sig Pistol (3.9" Bbl): MVa=1,298.7fps w/9.4fps SD. All my ammo was headstamped WMA 25. My friend bought two cases several weeks earlier, his was headstamped WMA 24 and had NO glops of excess sealant. Something clearly went wrong with Winchester's loading lines and QC to allow over 10% of the ammo they shipped to be defective. This is NOT a Brownells failure - it is a MAJOR Winchester failure. Again - I have photos if Brownells or Winchester cares.
