Nice fit and finish
Put on a rem 870 20 gauge youth. Just used a dremil and knocked down the detents on the mag tube and placed the new follower and spring in the tube, screwed on the extension, and bobs your uncle. The extension falls about 1 inch shy of the end of the barrel.
Perfect fit with no issue.
Bought this for the 3 round addition to our Rem. 870. After removing the BIG orange plug it was a 4 round addition. For home defense 7 is enough. but for target it sure is nice to get the 8th one in there. I have an older model so no dents to swage out. When on in seconds. One Tip, get the support bracket on tight. Not death grip tight, but tight. Recoil will cause it to move to the end if it's not tight enough. Not a detraction but a learning. Looks good, works good. If I had another gun like this I would get another one of these.
10 shot Remington 870 magazine extension
This product is exactly what I expected from Brownells. Quality and price were more than fair and the fit and finish was everything it was advertised to be. No problems installing it and it feeds perfectly. I highly recommend it. For home defense or the occasional Antifa riot (you know you were thinking that exact thing) I can't think of anything better that a 10 + 1 shot 870 Remington shotgun with high brass 34 shot.
Installation tricky
This kit will extend the 4+1 Rem 870 shot magazine to 9+1. The trick to successful installation is grinding the stop in the Rem magazine smooth. Otherwise the stop will catch upon loading shells. Dremel grinder will do the job...grind slowly...
Pleasantly Surprised
Like another user, I bought this to fit my 870 Youth 20 gauge, FYI its built on a smaller frame than the 12 gauge 870. Wanted a home defense/truck gun. I was nervous because I have never bought a Choate product, but I was not dissapointed.. The extension is beefy beyond all reasonable expectations. The clamp that comes with it is utilitarian, it works but I may replace it in the future, it also has a sling attachment point but I don't have a sling on this, so its useless to me so far. The locking collar/nut on the tube matched the matte finish on my gun but the tube itself is nicely blued. Not a big deal to me. The mag spring seems kind of cheap I may also replce it, we will see. All in all I am pretty happy with it so far.
How to get the edge on the bad guys
So simple to add on (even on the newer version) to the reliable 870 series of shotguns. Take that plug out, pop in the new spring and screw on the extension. You're now ready to surpise the intruder with an extra 3 shots just in case they decided to hold a family reunion at your home. Don't let them get away with it. You can load a few light loads of bird shot and follow up with good old buck shot if they don't get the hint. With the extension you don't have to worry about reloading so often. Some extra rounds in a butt stock holder and you're ready for swarms of bad guys or zoombies, whichever haunts your quiet neighborhood. Price is less than the Remington stock one and these extensions work just as well, if not better! I have them on all my 870s, both 12 Ga. and 20 Ga..
WORKS GREAT
Purchased this for my 870 youth 21" barrel, 20 gaand it works perfect. Removed the detents, installed barrel, orange shell follower into spring, extension onto the magazine, then the provided clamp and done! Increased capacity to 7 & 1. Cycles great without cutting spring, extends to about 1" less than the barrel.
Great upgrade
It took nearly five minutes to install the extension on an 870 Express not burdened with the internal ratchet system that would require drilling or grinding out the detents in the magazine tube. That included cleaning all the reddish-brown grease out of the extension. The finish matches the matte finish of the shotgun fairly close. The tube threads down as tightly as the magazine cap it replaces without any slop. It seems to be more dent-proof than the factory tube. The provided clamp locked up well on the 20" tapered barrel and larger-diameter extension tube behind rifle sight ramp. The three-round tube extends out exactly to the muzzle. Choate also includes an orange, plastic follower that is an improvement over the short, flimsy factory part. Minor points: The extension doesn't come with instructions, and the clamp doesn't ship with hardware that would allow one to do away with the attached sling swivel loop if not needed.
Good product
I was a little skeptical at first, but at the end of the day I was pleased with this product. It is perfect with a 20" bbl. Solid mount. Make sure you have the spring and detent (available from Brownell's) on the barrel lug, as it will not work right with the plastic end cap retainer that comes with the 870 Express model. This should be intuitive, because you have to drill out the two impressions in the 870 mag tube in order for shells to pass into this extension tube. I put a bake-on coating on this item, baked it at 315F, and the plastic plug was unfazed. I like it!
Quality
Got this for my 21" youth h/d rig. excellent product fits like it should stronger than the gun itself by far, spring and follower are WAY better than factory. Like a total overhaul to the loading system. Plus it has the sling mount, bonus. Get this, you will not be disapointed.
