Excellent quality
I was given this barrel by my brother, he decided to go carbon fiber. After trueing up my donor SA Remington 700. The barrel was in 6.5 creed moor I chambered it in 260 AI after a 100 rounds I am amazed at the accuracy 3/4 at 100 yards and 1 1/8 at 200 yards. I have recently ordered a 308 for a build for my wife's gun.
A Great Product
Looking at the only other review of this item I felt obliged to put in my two cents. Our shop has been making custom rifles for over 17 years, and we have used dozens of these pre-threaded Shilens with universally excellent results. It is a time saver, not to mention being easier on both threading tools and chambering reamers. You do have to know how to pick up a thread (Lathe Work 101) and how to read a depth micrometer (Machine Tool 101) but we have found these barrels to be very easy to apply even though we use aftermarket (thicker) recoil lugs and blueprint every Remington action we use. Yes, there is fitting; and did you see the "short chambered" part-that's "fitting" AKA gunsmith stuff. There's' versatility as well as time saving here too: the .308 Win short chamber, for instance, can also just as easily become a .30-06 or even a .300 WinMag; just use the right reamer. For our part, when using a common cartridge in a 700, especially if ordering a custom stock, we look for these barrels; good quality, accurate and a good time saver.
Rebarrel Rem 700Win
Easy to install and ream for proper head space. Rem 700 factory barrels can be difficult to remove often requiring an impact hammer/barrel wrench. It would be nice if these replacement barrels could be ordered in different twist rates flutes, and with cerekote finishing.
accurate barrel
Bought this barrel last winter for a low budget DIY hunting rifle project. I carefully measured and trued up a donor 700 action, finish reamed the chamber to minimum headspace, epoxy bedded the action to a factory camo stock, & finished the metal with Rust-oleum spray paint! After fitting a Leupold 3x9, I proceeded to shoot groups as small as an honest 5/8". Good barrel.
Great barrel
I used this to rebarrel my remington, and it works as expected. Shilen makes a great barrel and the workmanship is excellent. With my first load I was able to shoot 0.750" group at 100 yards, about 1/2" less than the factory varmint barrel. This barrel is actually 24" long, not the 26" that the brownells listing implies it is.
could be better
I normally buy plain blanks. I thought I would try this pre-threaded short chambered barrel. It would be easier with plain blank. If someone thought they could bypass gunsmithing with this they would be very disappointed.
