Functions as it should...
This action mandrel is as you would hope to get…accurate dimensions, excellent machining. Fits correctly and functions properly.
Impossible to do good without it!
I bought one of these years ago when the small ring Mauser were plentiful. Works fantastic and a lathe due to its superior quality. I put mine between centers on the lathe before I used it and it had zero run out. Mixed truing up receivers easy, quick, and correct. I had one I made 50 years ago that was not nearly as good. Allows you to get an accurate and perfect fit for your Barrel
GOOD TOOL
Before I used the tool I checked it for run out, and found none. The steel the tool is made of has been hardened, and showed no signs of wear after the work was finished; it should last forever. I faced 3 Mauser 98 receivers using this tool, and a lathe. One receiver was a WW 2 production German 98K, one was WW 2 production Czechoslovakian, and one pre-war on a Thomas Bland & Sons custom rifle. In all instances the tool worked perfectly. Expect tight threads, and if the receiver is clamped in a vice be certain that it isn't so tight that that it temporarily deforms the receiver enough to bind on the threads.
Anderson Services Gunsmith Prefered!
Purchased as a replacement to our old one that had seen decades of use and abuse. Only used it once but knowing Brownells quality we fully expect a few more decades out of this new one.
Nice equipment
This worked well when blueprinting my action. The 338 Ultra mag Built shot a 0.268 group with 250 grain Lapua bullets and a healthy load of N560. nice for a hunting gun and have the pictures to prove it. would buy again.
Used with a VZ 24 Mauser
As received the Facing Mandrel was 14 3/8 inch long. The receiver side dia was 0.7018 and 10 in long. the threads fit the LRM receiver and the shaft fit snugly. The dia of the shaft outside the receiver was 0.7518 and was 4 inch long with two flats. The ends have a center tap hole for turning on center. Works great for facing a LRM with a lath. Do not know if the Mason receiver facing cutter works on this shaft dia of 0.7518 in. I would give 5 stars if Bownells had a facing tool or it was made to be used with the Mason face cutting tool.
Had to make a bushing for this to work
This mandrel as sold will not work. There is no shoulder to stop the mandrel in the receiver like a '98 Mauser. The threaded portion of the mandrel goes in beyond the receiver threads and will not secure the receiver to the mandrel. I made a bushing .701" long, .713" inside diameter, and .870" outside diameter to get it to work. The bushing goes against the bolt locking lugs and the mandrel threads to secure the mandrel in the receiver.
