Color case hardening...
Using this and Brownells Oxpho Blue to create a color case hardened look on a 1954 Browning A5 shotgun. So far have just worked on the tang, but appears it will be awesome.
It works
Plum brown works. I used it to finish a black powder rifle barrel. I heated the metal with a propane torch and applied the product with a cotton pad (the kind the wife uses to remove her make up). I was looking for a deep rich brown. I took my time and applied 6 coats of Plum Brown, buffing with degreased 0000 steel wool in between applications. It was a bit tedious to get the entire barrel a uniform temp but in the end I had a gorgeous barrel for my rifle, it is a deep plum brown (imagine that...) A word of caution, thoroughly rinse the barrel in fresh water and baking soda solution when you are finished and coat with a quality oil. Watch from rust and reapply oil for the next few days.
Works as claimed
This was my first experience finishing any firearm. Building a black powder smooth bore pistol from scratch. The liquid color is light blue and has an acidic smell to it, something akin to vinegar, but not vinegar. I preheated the kitchen oven to 275, while I cleaned all gun parts in the sink with liquid dish washing detergent, scrubbing with a pad to get all grease off. Then placed the parts to be finished in the oven. After warmed I brought them to the protected stove top and wiped the browning solution on using a cotton ball. They turned brown immediately, very impressive how fast! My first thought was that's ugly but after rinsing and rubbing with a fine steel wool the part did look nice. The barrel took brown quite nicely and I think because it held the heat longer but the smaller parts that cooled off faster looked more blotchy. The smaller parts required extra applications. Use gloves and ventilation. I am pleased with the appearance.

This is absolutely the best product for browning a weapon. overall coverage is better than any other product I've used. even great and easy for touching up and fixing spots without doing the entire weapon.

I'm building a muzzleloader for the first time from a kit and wanted an authentic finish. The directions for the Plumb Brown were very easy to follow and the resulting finish was outstanding.. Good product!
