BRN-4® UPPER RECEIVER ASSEMBLIES

BRN-4® UPPER RECEIVER ASSEMBLIES Reviews & Ratings

BRN-4® UPPER RECEIVER ASSEMBLIES

Assembled from All New Components – Fits Standard AR-15 Lowers

The BRN-4® Upper Receiver is now available as an Assembled Upper, with Barrel and Gas System installed. Simply add your preferred HK® 416 compatible handguard and any 1/2-28 muzzle device, and you’re ready to hit the range!

Built from the ground up, the core of the BRN-4® Upper Receiver is an all new Bolt Carrier Group, featuring a phosphate carrier and a chrome bolt. The carrier itself is machined from one piece of forged 8620 steel. The bolt is precision machined from 9310 tool steel and headspaced prior to and after barrel installation.

The new BRN-4® barrel, produced by Faxon®, is available in a variety of profiles and lengths to suit your needs. Barrels are chambered 5.56x45mm NATO, are button rifled with a 1-7 twist, 1/2-28 muzzle and come with the appropriate gas block for a given barrel length. Barrels are available in a medium or heavy profile. The heavy profile ensures a rigid and robust platform for precision shooting. The medium profile balances the desire to have a lighter piston configuration, while still having plenty of barrel material to prevent drifting of grouping as the barrel heats.

The upper receiver utilized in this assembly is made completely new, from billet, to mirror the profiles commonly found on forged upper receivers. Contours of the upper are entirely machined from billet, so rounded areas such as the cam pin protrusion and complex contours will show machine passes more prominently. The machined upper is finished with matte black hard coat anodizing. The proper piston bushing is installed to eliminate any piston wear on the aluminum part, and is secured in place with blue threadlocker. The BRN-4® features much longer barrel nut threads, engaging the barrel extension over a much larger surface area than a standard AR-15. This ensure that the barrel is rigidly mounted with the pre-installed barrel nut. Barrel nut is torqued properly with AeroShell Grease 64 applied to the upper receiver threads. The barrel nut is reinstalled 3 times to ensure an accurate torque spec is achieved.

Gas blocks are vented forward, to reduce gas sent rearward into the system, and are mated specific to the 10.4 or 14.5/16 inch barrel lengths.

Upper includes Magpul ejection port cover and mil-spec charging handle.

Handguard installation is extremely simple, just slide handguard over the barrel and tighten one bolt. Be sure to follow any specific instructions advised by the manufacturer.

Muzzle devices installation is also straightforward, as the barrel is 1/2-28 and the BRN-4 upper is compatible with common upper receiver “rods” and jigs. Any AR-15 1/2-28 muzzle device will be compatible.

Brownells recommend H1 or H2 recoil buffer with carbine recoil spring for optimal operation.

*** Brownells recommends use of 5.56x45mm NATO newly manufactured quality ammunition for optimal operation

All BRN-4 Upper Receiver Assemblies are test fired before final packaging. Upper may display signs of firing, such as brass marks on the shell deflector or slight fouling inside.

BRN-4
Installed with Midwest hand guard. Snugged up tight with zero slop. It appears that the machining marks issue has been addressed because mine didn’t have any. The only issue I have is that there is a tiny amount of play between the lower and upper when pinned. Tried several lowers and had the same amount of play. It’s ever so slight but it bothers my OCD. Fixed it with a $1.98 wedge and it now locks up tight. Replaced the inexpensive charging handle that came with.

So far I am very please with this purchase. Very good quality and is the back bone of a nice HK416 clone build.

American made 416
Basically the best choice for building a 416 in the states. as far as cost to what you are getting , this is an incredible deal. Only wish the barrel was cold hammer forged. Absolutely would recommend.

BRN-4
Good quality, well designed for replicating a piston driven HK416. The only change out would be the charging handle but it depends on whether you are performing a clone correct or modern version.

My first build
Very impressed with the quality of this upper receiver and looking forward to completing the build. Thanks Brownells!

Surprising.
During the sale summer 24. These where knocked down pretty well. Upper arrived quickly. Specificlly on the product. Pros. Everything short of the reciver looks well machined, no toolong issues, markings or anything of the sort. Functionally smooth. Shoots very well on a bcm h2 buffer+recoil spring. Good for "hk416 at home" especially if your going to accually shoot it. I have the medium 14.5 version. Everyone states these are weighty uppers. With the medium profile barrel. Its honestly comperable to a dd m4a1 weight wise. Lighter then a psa jakl. My only complaint is they need to do one more cnc pass or slow down their machine speed. on uppers. Exterior is a bit rough. But still usable. At least its better made then titan defense uppers.

Brn-4 upper
I purchased a brn-4 upper recently. I have to say I am very pleased with the quality of this receiver. The company might have corrected the matching/milling marks that other reviewers mentioned or I am not that picky lol! I have seen ones from major large companies that are unacceptable! Anyways I end up purchasing 2 more in different barrel lengths and with chrome lined barrel. Just waiting for a few items from Brownells so I can head out to range to try it out!

Took a chance on a 416 clone.
When I was in the Army I had the opportunity to use a actual 416 in Afghanistan. Even though I preferred my standard issue M4, the HK impressed me. So when Brownells came out with their clone, I decided to build one once it had been established for awhile. Off the bat I was impressed with the attention to detail and the quality of the components. Everything about this upper is solid and feels duty grade. Once I had the base build complete it was time to put rounds through it. Since I opted for the heavy barrel version I expected decent “milspec” accuracy. What I got surprised me. Since I was shooting off a tripod with iron sights at 30 meters, I figured at least 2 inch groups and larger. What I got was consistent .5 to .75 inch. The ammo I was using was 55 to 62gr and a mixture of cheap brass range ammo and steel case Russian stuff. On top of that the rifle didn’t hiccup once and locked back every time the gun ran dry. If your looking for a accurate rifle that is both accurate and built ready for duty, this is it. It’s heavier than a standard AR but the piston system make for an very clean running rig.

We have 416 at home…
Great upper with minimal machining marks on mine, only noticeable at certain angles. Who cares? No tears here. I’m gonna rattle can it anyway.
