Retro build
I bought this as a gift for a family member doing a retro XM-177 build. It's period correct, what more can one ask from such an item? After being used to 6 position stocks the two position seems a little limiting, but it is what it is, a fascinating piece of history from the early days of the AR platform.
Mine was perfect
This latest batch of 2-position buffer tubes seem to be perfectly in spec and I had no problems installing mine. The fit and finish is perfect and a mil-spec CAR stock fits tight with very little wobble.
2 Position Tube
I only give this a "Good" because although dimensionally it is correct, the anodized color choice was Silver/Gray. I was hoping for a color matching XM Gray or a Green Label Colt Gray. I'll end up using it of course but it will get re-finished.
Good, But
The quality is ok, But the color is far from mil-spec. Someone is color blind
Exactly what I expected
A perfect reproduction 2 position receiver extension. Typical Brownell's dark grey anodizing ( a bit darker then what is on most original Colt's) . My aluminum vinyl-acetate stock was tight, but did fit and latched in both the open and closed position.
BROWNELLS BUFFER TUBE 2 POSITION
The tube is of excellent overall quality. The grey coloration is nice but quite the same color or texture as an original Colt. But, it's a great value given its price point. The only issue I see is that an original Colt vinyl acetate stock will not close and latch properly. This is due to the threads on the tube making contact with the stock. To close it, you have to give it a slight whack; however, it's extremely hard to extend the stock afterwards. An original SP1 2-pos. tube has a different thread design at the rear where the stock body make contact that I believe this tube should mimic. This tube will, however, work fine with the N1 fiberlite stocks and every mil-spec synthetic buttstock I've tried. To be fair, the Colt vinyl acetate stocks I've tried experience the same issue with closing/latching on the more modern factory Colt 4 and 6 position tubes as well, again due to the thread design where the stock touches the threads. Since most people will likely choose this particular 2-pos. tube for a retro project, I believe the threads on the tube need to be re-shaped (tapered) towards the rear so that a Colt vinyl acetate stock, or copies thereof (Essential Arms) will close and latch properly. This slight modification would not affect fitment of a synthetic stock, such as an N1 style, in any way but would improve the usefulness of this tube immensely. I could, but refuse, to modify an expensive factory original Colt vinyl acetate stock body. Overall, however, this tube is very nice, and if you can live with its limitations, I highly recommend it to buyers who are looking for a high quality 2-position carbine buffer tube.
doesn't fit right
Bought this tube from a dealer about a year ago, just got around to putting it on my SP1 carbine. A little dark in color but close enough. there is a hole drilled in the most open position into where the spring goes, might be so it's not confused with a original colt. My problem is that my original colt aluminum stock will not close completely. After checking the diameter of the tube, most of it is 1.143" but the last quarter inch near the threads is .010" bigger 1.153". Not real happy, don't know if I can return it now. Maybe they have resolved this issue, or maybe it was mine only.
Listen to the reviews on color
Quality wise, this is still an excellent product. But color wise, it is not even remotely gray, it is shiny silver. It will make a good spare tube, but it won't go on any actual XM gray receiver. Picture is on an H&R receiver set for reference.
seems good except for color
didnt have fitment issue like others but yeah bright silver not the retro grey or even "close enough" i have a brn proto and this might as well be chrome next to it lol
