AR-15 RETRO HANDGUARD SETS Reviews & Ratings

AR-15 RETRO HANDGUARD SETS

Recreate an American Classic with the Brownells M16A1 Handguard Set, built to accurately replicate the original handguards issued to thousands of American servicemen & women. This Handguard Set is modeled directly off of original handguards, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find, or in decent condition. Left and Right Handguard halves include aluminum heatshields, protecting your hand and the handguards from barrel heat. Combine the Handguard Set with the matching Pistol Grip & Buttstock Assembly from Brownells, and you have a new condition furniture set for your AR-15, M16, M16A1 or other early model rifle. Handguards include instructions and heatshields. Available in several different colors including:

  • Black - Proper for Model 602, XM16E1, M16A1 & later generation rifles introduced after 1963
  • Green - Proper for early Model 601 rifles, the first AR-15 adopted by the US Air Force in 1959
  • Brown - Similar to the earliest AR-15 Prototype rifle furniture used in the late 1950s

Retro furniture from Brownells is not an exact copy of original components or their construction. Some areas have been changed due to manufacturing methods or to avoid counterfeit concerns.

Looks kinda like the A1 hand guard.
It's a little difficult to get the mating surfaces aligned so it's not contorted into position. I did it with a file in about 10 minutes. I bought one each brown and black, and the reviews will be the same for both. A bit pricy for the quality you get.

Old school
The quality was good everything seem to be within length however, they did not fit on my A.R. 15. I tried every which way to get them on all the Delta ring and up to the triangle seem like one side was just a little too large sent it back maybe order try again

Additional Info On My Original Review
After considerable emails with Brownells, we found that my 2008 DPMS has a straight profile Heavy Barrel. Evidently this was not always the case. DPMS and other makers of H-Bar Rifles have a slight stepped down section about 4 inches behind the front sight post. This would accommodate an A1 Style Hand Guard. Any H-Bar Barrel with a 1 inch diameter from receiver to sight post will require removal or modifications to the internal, aluminum heat shield. It can be done with some foresight and ingenuity, but you absolutely WILL VOID The Warranty. Needless to say, Brownells is a top notch company who delivers what they promise. In my case they had to educate me on my own rifle and barrel configurations. Thank You Ken...You're Help Was Immeasurable!!!

M16 type forestock
Nice fit and arrived quickly. Could have been a little sturdier but perfect for my needs.

Looks the business, pain to install
This was a big pain in the rear to install! I'm familiar with installing handguards and have the special tool for it as well. Ultimately no material removal was needed- just a little bit of colorful language, a firm tap of frustration, and a whole lot of fiddling. Your mileage may vary, I think there's probably lots of variation among delta rings and handguard retainers, and most manufacturers probably aren't thinking "will this work with those cool triangular handguards from yesteryear?" It fits the gas block on my dissipator which is nice considering I didn't even think of that. (oops!) Anyways, you're probably installing this for a particular look, which it absolutely delivers on. Looks FANTASTIC. Just know you'll possibly have to work for it. And yeah, they'll make you realize there's a reason for A2 handguards. The heat shield placement makes less sense, the vent holes are a little sharp on the edges, and it's just generally not as good of a design as the A2. That's not a failure on Brownell's part, it was just inherent to the original M16 design. Bottom line, if you want to pick your AR up and think tiger stripe camo and fortunate son, this is for you.

Very nice
Relatively easy to install. The black color matches perfectly with the butt stock of the gun. Haven't tried it while shooting but I'm itching to get to the range to try it out and show it off.

Great option for retro style rifles.
This fit the bill on my WWSD2020/21 dissipator-style build. I can confirm it fits the Windham M4 Dissipator barrel assembly without modification. My only complaint, which is a minor personal opinion and preference, is that the texturing/surface of the piece leaves a little to be desired. A quick couple coats of Textured Black Rustoleum and it matched the polymer texture of the KE ARMS KP15 lower and wasnt as slick or shiny to the touch.

Happy with my purchase.
Wanted an inexpensive/affordable A1 style forearm for my AR 15 retro build and I took a chance on this one. Fit perfectly on my A3 flattop upper and looks cool. I don't have anything to compare it too, like a mil spec, but I don't think it would last a day in combat, however for the purposes of my lifestyle and projects it's just perfect and just about as mil spec as it needs to be. It does have a fully functioning heat shield which was better than the one my upper came with. No complaints, would buy again.
