There are untold thousands of rimfire .22’s over the country today that need only a barrel liner to bring them back to their original shooting abilities. Some of these guns are beautiful collection pieces, others are fine hunting guns and some of them are just “loved” by their owners who want them back to their original condition. Redman 22 Barrel Liners are button rifled with ultra smooth, uniform finish and sharp, distinct rifling for superb accuracy that’s better than - or equal to - an original, new barrel. The instruction booklet gives complete, easy-to-follow details for either the old, classic method of soldering the liners in or, the more modern method of using ACRAGLAS® for the permanent bond between barrel and liner.

Barrel Liner Instruction Book details the systems used by gunsmiths Bob Schuetz, Willis Sprunger and Ralph Walker. Walker used a variable speed hand drill and ACRAGLAS to hold the liner in. Schuetz solders the liner in place. Sprunger extended a regular bit, drilled the hole in a lathe and bonded with ACRAGLAS.

barrel liner drill bit is short

I have a couple of older rifles that have long barrels, and I have to use most of the long liners I bought. Even if I come from both sides of the barrel with the drill bit (which I have to do regardless), the longest drill bit they have for 22 is still too short. I'll probably just add length to the shank, but a drill bit that already has a longer shank would save some time. The drill bit and liners are still nice, so I gave them a "Good" rating.

Tips For The Professional

NOTE: these tips are for the Professional Gunsmith and persons who are properly trained on chambering and operating a lathe; and are meant to be in addition to following the Brownells instruction manual. 1. Evaluate Firearm - budget 6 to 8 hours for disassembly, setup in lathe to drill both ends, detailed cleaning of other parts, final fitting and assembly. It can be a long process to do properly, so charge accordingly. Be sure to clean, evaluate and repair as needed before starting this process. 2. 4 Jaw Chuck - be very careful not to damage the barrel's finish with the chuck or spider, as most older barrels are made of softer then expected metal. I used a 5/16 bottom cutting end-mill to start the hole at the breach because the extractor cut interfered with the pilot drill. 3. Starter Chamber - if you are capable of cutting a new chamber, I would strongly recommend cutting off the starter chamber and reaming a fresh one, as the one cut in my liner was so rough that it almost wasn't recoverable; and I didn't realize it until after it was epoxied in. 4. Securing Liner - after thoroughly degreasing the barrel, lightly scuffing and cutting shallow groves in both ends of the liner, I secured it in place using 262 RED Loctite, and it worked great! Just be sure to use rubber plugs to help keep it out of the new barrel; makes cleanup easer, and helps keep the epoxy where it belongs.
