POLISH-O-RAY®

POLISH-O-RAY® Reviews & Ratings

The answer to a gun polisher's dream! Made to the highest standards of quality with carefully screened, true-sized grits for reliable, repeatable results and a natural, greaseless base that doesn't leave a residue to mess up bluing or plating jobs. Packed in a formed, flexible plastic tube to stay fresh between uses. 1) Unlike hard drying abrasives, Polish- O-Ray® sets up to a medium soft surface without flinty hard flakes which, regardless of grit size being used, can do serious damage to a polished surface. 2) It is easily applied to polishing wheels without stopping the motor. Simply press the open end of the tube to your wheel; the polish adheres to the moving surface, hardens in a few seconds and is ready for use. 3) Because of its softer nature, a true, ripple-free surface is quickly obtained on all wheels. The best possible polished surface, free from ripples and bounce marks, is your assurance of a superior, professional refinishing job. Polish-O-Ray® does this for you. 4) Polish-O-Ray® has been used by gunsmiths, metal finishers, and aircraft manufacturers since the early 1940's.

Wherever a quality surface, free from chatter marks, scratch marks and imperfections is required, the use of Polish-O-Ray® is a MUST. One precision manufacturer in the southeast orders by the keg. And, where else but on a gun does a perfect finish draw more praise and admiration? These beautiful finishes are the reason for Polish-O-Ray®'s continuing popularity among our country's gunsmiths and serious hobbyists. By following the "Master Metal Polisher's" technique, it is possible to obtain a top quality finishing job in a minimum of time with P-O-R®. Gunsmith Kinks™. It consists; mainly, of starting with the coarsest grit and polishing the surface in one direction; then, with the next finer grit on a different wheel polishing at 45° angles to the first "pass". By following this procedure down through the finer grit numbers, the final surface is unequaled for quality and perfection.

Polish-O-Ray® is shipped in a resealable outer bag. Put the tube back in the bag, seal with a twist tie and ALWAYS store all your Polish-O-Ray® - brand new or partially used - in the refrigerator for longest life.

Polish-O-Ray in general
This stuff works best on a buffing wheel designed for polishing guns. The 400 is very fine and will produce a mirror shine. The other grits help get pits out and brings the barrel, etc up to a place where you can polish it. Requires Refrigeration but goes on the buffing wheel easily. Although I might say, it will spin off on you and on other things so you need a dirty room with your buffer. And it does have a shelf life of a year or so.

Polish-O-Ray in general
Read other reviews as the material is the same except for the grit. 400 will polish to a mirror shine. You will need cotton gloves because a good buffing wheel is required & it gets the metal hot in a hurry. It does require refrigeration but goes on easily. I would say the shelf life is about a year even in a good zip-lock bag with some moisture. Be sure to label with a black marker the grit if you have more than one grit of this polish. after opening, it gets hard to distinguish the grits. Always use a separate buffing wheel for each grit you use. But in general, this is very good polish.

Warning! This stuff is great but beware.
Polish-O-Ray is a mainstay of Brownells almost as popular as Acra-glas; but it is unlike any other buffing compound you have used. The 140 grit will absolutely THROW SPARKS with even light pressure. I am convinced you could cut a barrel in half with it. If you are used to "black or grey emery","brown tripoli" and such - better off trying a finer grit first. I use the 320 or 500 grit for most of my rough work. Also, if you store in a Zip-lock freezer bag, add a little water and seal it tight, and put it in the refrigerator - it will last for years without hardening.

Brings Brightness
All Polish-O-Ray grits do a fine job of removing old blue, rust spots, and other blemishes from barrels. I've been using it for over 30 years and have yet to find fault with this product. Just keep it sealed and refrigerated between uses and it lasts forever.
