CHOATE - Steel SKS Scope Mount

This is the best and most solid scope mount I have found for the Sks rifle. I have two Soviet Sks rifles so one of them will be getting this mount installed on it. The casting is a little rough but everything lines up perfect so far. Will let you know how it performs but I imagine I will have good results as there wont be any rattle to worry about as it will become part of the rifle. Plus, Brownells is one of the few companies that ships to Canada. Even with delivery (no duty on items under $100) it was cheaper than buying it over here. Requires a bit of effort and measurements to install, but provides a very steady and practical rail. Be careful not to cover any part of the serial number or importer name. and be aware that you probably will have to trim a slice of the stock. SKSs have very hard receivers, so get a couple of extra high quality bids before starting, to avoid frustrations.

Let's begin with the bad. The rail part is left in "as cast" condition, which means it's a little rough. More cosmetic than anything. For some reason the slots don't run the whole length of the rail... odd, but you can still clamp one of the scope mounts on that part (although it seems to sit slightly lower than the rest). All that said: it works. Original sights are still usable, and the gun can still be field stripped and reassembled. I find that the bolt and carrier have to be removed separately... al little more awkward, but doable. The mount itself could be used to lift engines. It ain't gonna shift or bend! My SKS never shot nearly this well. One more thing: with a short enough scope (about 7.5" max), one can still use stripper clips. One can go a little longer if that's not a concern.

It was emotionally difficult to drill and tap the receiver because it's an irreversible change, but was easy to actually do. A drill press is a must. This firmly attaches the scope to the gun and has better accuracy than the multitude of other options I've tried. 4 stars instead of 5 because the casting is somewhat rough, but it doesn't affect function.
