What is the HERITAGE GUN BOOKS - Colt Double Action Revolvers Shop Manual-Volume I?

224 pages. 6" x 9". Softbound. Debunks the myths surrounding the D, E and I frame (Python, old model Trooper, Detective Special and other large frames with Python style lock work) by carefully explaining and simplifying the complex relationships between Cylinder Bolt, Rebound Lever and Hand. Numerous photos and illustrations make it simple to understand these Colts and eliminate the “fear” factor. Gives bench pre-checks to identify problems before disassembly, then proceeds through disassembly, inspection, parts check, specific repairs, fitting new parts and reassembly.

Bought my first Colt
I've heard the old style Colt actions, the D,E and I frame double action revolvers, referred to as the "Watchmakers" revolvers. As in, their actions are very precise and intricate. Comparing the double action trigger pull of my newly acquired 1975 Colt Detective Special to my 1989-ish S&W 586-3, I can honestly say that the Colt has a consistent pull weight throughout its pull range, which translates into an amazingly stable sight picture that bests my 586-3. Anyone familiar with the S&W 586-3 knows what an excellent revolver it is and for it to take second seat to another revolver, is high praise, indeed, for its competition. And as remarkable as the old style Colt action is, I've been warned not to tinker with it in anything resembling a haphazard fashion, lest I mess up a very finely tuned mechanism and with that warning in mind I sought out the best guide on the old style Colt actions that I could find. And that search brought me to this book. Now I've only had this book a week, or so ( at the time of this writing ) and I have not read it from cover to cover, but my impressions so far is that it is a very detailed examination of an intricate, finely tuned mechanism, that is well worth the price if it keeps Bubba from gumming up the works.
