The BRN®-180 SCNR brings proven short-stroke piston operation, a bufferless architecture and modern handling features together in one highly adaptable upper receiver system.
SCNR: Side-Charging, Non-Reciprocating, defines one of the upper’s most noticeable upgrades. Its streamlined charging handle is positioned on the left side of the receiver for intuitive operation and remains stationary while firing. The downward-angled design provides additional clearance around optics, while a protective gasket helps prevent dirt, dust and debris from entering the receiver.
The self-contained bolt-carrier assembly eliminates the need for a traditional AR-15 buffer tube, making the BRN®-180 SCNR ideal for compact builds and folding-stock configurations. It also maintains compatibility with standard mil-spec AR-15 lower receivers, giving builders the freedom to create a rifle around their individual needs.

Side-Charging, Non-Reciprocating Operation
The BRN®-180 SCNR replaces the traditional reciprocating charging handle with a streamlined, non-reciprocating handle positioned on the left side of the receiver. Because the handle remains stationary during firing, it stays clear of the shooter and support hand as the action cycles.

Angled Charging Handle
The charging handle features an ergonomic downward-angled profile for intuitive support-hand operation and additional clearance around mounted optics.

Sealed Charging-Handle Channel
A rubber gasket seals the charging-handle channel while still allowing the handle to move freely, helping protect the receiver’s internal components from dirt, dust and debris.

Automatic Ejection-Port Cover
The traditional hinged dust cover is replaced by an automatic ejection-port cover integrated with the bolt-carrier assembly. It opens as the carrier cycles and closes again when the action returns to battery, helping seal the receiver from external contaminants.

Tool-Free Adjustable Gas System
An easily accessible gas control allows quick, tool-free adjustment for ammunition, suppressor use and operating conditions. .223 Wylde models provide three gas settings, while .300 Blackout models add a fourth setting for demanding ammunition combinations, including heavy unsuppressed subsonic loads.

Retained Bolt-Carrier Assembly
A redesigned retention system keeps the guide-rod and bolt-carrier assembly securely contained when the upper is separated from the lower receiver. For field stripping, press the retention button to release and remove the assembly for a more controlled disassembly process with fewer loose components.

The piston operating system, robust guide rod springs and anti-bounce bolt carrier work together to support dependable cycling even as fouling builds. Sealed receiver openings also help protect the action from external dirt and debris.
Side-Charging Ergonomics
The left-side charging handle is easy to operate with the support hand while leaving the firing hand in place. Its non-reciprocating design remains stationary during firing for a clean, unobstructed shooting experience.
Simple Piston Operation
The self-contained short-stroke piston system replaces the traditional AR-15 gas tube, buffer and recoil spring arrangement. The result is a compact operating system with straightforward disassembly and maintenance.
Tool-Free Gas Control
Adjust gas flow quickly with an easy-to-reach lever and no tools required. Select the setting that fits your suppressor, ammunition and operating conditions, then get back to shooting.
Rigid Accessory Mounting
A rigid handguard attachment system provides a solid platform for lights, lasers, grips and other accessories, while integrated QD sockets provide convenient sling-mounting options.
Retained Recoil Assembly
The captured guide rod and recoil spring assembly stays securely in place when the upper is opened or removed from the lower. When it is time for maintenance, a simple release allows the assembly to be removed for cleaning.
