From the outset, the goal of Hornady's Black line of ammunition was to ensure that every modern sporting rifle could feed this ammo without issue. That lofty goal was made even harder by the fact that today's tactical guns run on a range of different operating systems and gas-system lengths and are suppressed and unsuppressed. All these variables came to a head in the Hornady black 224 Valkyrie line. The evolution of the 224 Valkyrie cartridge, first developed by Federal Premium, came about from a goal of designing a super-accurate, long-range cartridge that could fit into a standard AR-15. With this in mind, Hornady selected components in its Black lineup for best-possible functioning in various AR rifle platforms.
