What is the BROWNELLS - Checkering Cradle?
The Brownells Checkering Cradle makes checkering so much easier! Two of the most important advantages of a good checkering cradle are: 1) It allows you to work with both hands and rotate the stock as you checker across the pattern, keeping the work area at the most comfortable, controlled position. This eliminates the clumsy and difficult task of trying to work around a stationary stock and following the pattern correctly from border to border. 2) Prevents the back-and-forth wobble that kills the cutting action of the checkering tools. If the stock is not securely held, it will move with the cutter. This movement lets the cutter “grab” the stock and makes it almost impossible to cut straight, even lines of uniform depth. Simple in design, low in cost, of rugged wood construction and highly practical. Adjustable to hold rifle stocks up to 33” long (which will include all stocks except Mannlicher-style) and all shotgun stocks and forends. Holds the stock rigidly, without marring finish, yet permits turning of the stock as the work progresses. Convenient also for stock inletting, sanding, staining and finishing. Bolt it directly to a bench, or lock into a sturdy vise. Comes complete with all holders, bolts and instructions.

Checkering Cradle dimensions: 41-3/8” long x 8-1/4” high x 1-1/2” wide

Expensive 2x4
This is very useful for the process of staining and checkering, but like others have said its essentially an over priced 2x4. Honestly, I bought this over making it because I didnt have the time to spare for one of my classes. It seems solid enough and that most of the price comes from stamping the Brownells name into the board.

Expected better... much better
Considering the fact that it bears the Brownell's name, I expected better, much better... better design, better manufacturing. It is made simply from a 2 x 4 and a few bolts that anybody can buy from your local hardware store and make with a saw and drill press. The 42 inch 2x4 that came with mine is twisted. Brownell's would do better to sell the design on-line for approximately $15.00. Or to require that the item be made from better material (maple, wallet, cherry, or even sold plastic). That all being said, this tool, along with checkering tools Dem-Bart and a refinishing, will help me turn a rifle I bought for $500 into one that looks like one worth $2000.
2
Disappointed
I had ordered this ahead of an NRA stock finishing gunsmith course. I had to chase all the through holes on the drill press to accept the long stove bolts. The upright holes were offset about 1/8 off. So the locating dowels on the upright supports just snapped because of misalignment. So, I wallowed out the holes and epoxied in brass dowel rods. Just carelessly fabricated.

Warning
For this price I expected better than a pine 2x4 with a handful of hardware store nuts and bolts. It is not even worth the price of shipping.
