Adapts to angle of spring, spreads compression evenly over the entire spring area and is perfect for installing “V” springs in shotguns and muzzleloaders. A tool that every LC Smith gunsmith needs
After years of use vise grips to collapse the spring and sear to install on the side plates this tool works wonders and does not damage the spring or sear. I wis they mad a smaller one for other guns. .

Nice features
It has a lot of flexibility depending on the lock. Mine, a Pedersoli, was very different with an added link between the mainspring and cock. It worked.

L.C. Smith hammer spring vise
The vise is well made and robust. However, there were no instructions and it took several attempts to get the placement just right. Once I found the sweet spot, the spring went easily into register. Good opportunity for a YouTube from Brownell

Well made tool.
This is a well make tool but is is not a universal. It works well on a couple of my vintage shotguns with longer "V" springs but it will not fit the main spring on a Holland & Holland Royal. This gun has a rather short spring and pads at the end of the tool arm spaced too far apart to grip the spring on that gun. A less elegant solution for the H&H and guns with similarly short springs is a set off parallel clamps.
