Reloading Series: Powder Dispensing

Introduction to Powder Dispensing

Hey everyone, Caleb and Steve here from Brownells! In today’s episode of our reloading series, we’re moving on to powder dispensing. In the last video, we primed some cases, so now it’s time to measure out and add the powder. If you’re working with bottleneck rifle cases, you’re all set to start. But if you’re using straight wall cases for handguns or specific rifles, you’ll need to flare the case neck before adding powder. Let’s break down each step and tool to get you set up for success.

Flare and Prime Straight-Wall Cases

Before you can load powder into straight wall cases, you’ll need to add a small flare to the case neck. This ensures that the bullet will seat smoothly without damaging the case. To illustrate, we’re using a 9mm case, which requires this flare before moving to powder dispensing. We’re using the Lee Precision Powder Through Expander Die for this setup, which can also dispense powder automatically if you’re using a progressive reloading setup.

Powder Dispenser Options

Once you’re ready to add powder, there are a few ways to do it, depending on your budget and needs:

Scoop or Dipper: The most affordable and basic method, which often comes with your reloading set. Simply dip it into your powder, level it off, and pour it in.

Balance Beam Scale: A traditional tool that lets you weigh powder manually. You’ll pour a little powder, check the weight, and add more using a powder trickler if needed.

Digital Scale: A more convenient option that provides quick and precise weight readouts.

Powder Dispenser: This tool offers the fastest method, ideal for loading several cases quickly.

Demonstrating Case Flare for Bullet Seating

To demonstrate the importance of case flare, we’ll show you how a slightly flared case mouth allows the bullet to rest neatly on top without tilting or getting crushed. This small step can make a huge difference in your reloading consistency, especially with straight wall cases like 9mm or .45 ACP.

Basic Powder Dispensing Tools: Scoops, Beams, and Tricklers If you’re just getting started, a powder scoop is a quick and inexpensive way to measure powder. For greater precision, however, the balance beam scale paired with a trickler allows you to add powder a grain at a time to reach your exact load. While it’s a bit slower, this method is reliable and effective for accurate reloading.

Digital Scale Use and Accuracy Tips

The digital scale is another great option for powder dispensing, particularly if you value convenience and speed. You simply pour your powder and get an instant weight readout on the screen, making it easy to dial in each charge. Digital scales are ideal for quick adjustments, especially when paired with a powder trickler for fine-tuning.

Setting Up a Powder Dispenser for 9mm Cases

For repetitive tasks, we like using a powder dispenser. Once set up for 9mm cases, it consistently dispenses the correct charge, allowing you to move down the loading block efficiently. This setup is perfect if you’re working on a batch of rounds and need each charge to be uniform for consistent shooting performance.

Advanced Powder Dispensers and Automated Settings

If you’re looking for even more precision and automation, consider the RCBS ChargeMaster or ChargeMaster Link, which connect to your smartphone and allow automatic dispensing. The ChargeMaster provides precise control over each powder charge, making it ideal for long-range or competitive shooters who need consistent performance.

Consistency Tips for Precision Loads

For optimal accuracy, periodically check your charge weight to ensure consistency. If you’re loading for precision, the powder charge is a critical piece of the accuracy puzzle. Keep everything consistent, especially if you’re pushing for max loads or competition-grade ammo.

Choosing the Right Tool for Your Reloading Needs

Ultimately, powder dispensing has options for every budget and purpose, from simple scoops to advanced electronic dispensers. No matter which tool you choose, consistency is key. Measure your powder accurately, especially for critical applications like long-range or high-precision shooting.

Closing Remarks

That’s all there is to dispensing powder for your reloads! In the next video, we’ll cover bullet seating and crimping, essential steps for reliable and safe ammunition.
