What is the HORNADY - Lock-N-Load Iron Press w/Manual Prime?

HORNADY LOCK-N-LOAD IRON PRESS WITH MANUAL PRIME

With a heavy duty, fully ambidextrous, cast iron frame, the Iron Press™ is built to be the heaviest, most rigid press in its class. Tight tolerances in manufacture and assembly combine to provide consistency and precision that will deliver match accurate ammunition, round-after-round, year-after-year. The available gravity fed Automatic Priming System (sold separately or with the Lock-N-Load® Iron Press™ Reloading Kit), combined with the Accessory Mounting Deck, increases reloading efficiency by allowing more processes to occur simultaneously. The Iron Press™ is the first of its kind to allow the ability to deprime, pause and remove the case to chamfer & deburr etc., then replace and prime. The Accessory Mounting Deck provides the hand loader with many options for quick access to items such as trays for bullets or cases, chamfer and deburr tools, case neck brushes, primer pocket cleaners and many more. Further ease of use comes from exclusive features such as a spring assist 1 1/8” solid steel ram and the patented Shell Holder Platform. And, as with all Hornady® metallic reloading presses, the Iron Press™ comes with the patented Lock-N-Load® bushing system that makes changeovers lightning fast.

Amazing!
I already own the Hornady AP progressive press, so Im very familiar with the lock and load bushing system that Hornady uses. I can load up a batch of 6.5 Creedmoor faster on this press, and more smoothly. The Iron press really shines when it comes to sizing rifle cases. The leverage you get from the Iron press helps my arm from getting too tired when sizing a lot of rifle cases. The open front of the press and the shell holder are very nice too. I wish I had bought this press in the beginning instead of wasting so much money trying other presses.

New Press
Got this to replace a green jr. press since I'm loading more large rifle calibers. Haven't ordered from Brownells for some time because I thought their shipping was slow. Price was so good that I ordered anyway. Ordered Monday evening and received Thursday before noon. Their shipping has improved. Now about the press, this thing is massive, a big chunk of iron. Love the completely open front, not sold on the shell holder platform device yet, may get used to it. Had a problem setting it up. Mounted press to bench, assembled per directions. First pull of handle and sheared off primer punch. Called Hornady customer service, was prepared to wait but after listening to menu, one ring and I was talking to a real person. I don't remember his name but he figured out what I needed and sent it out free of charge the same day. I am very happy with the outcome. By the way the reason the primer punch sheared off was because the ram is suppose to travel up about a 1/4" before it lifts the primer arm out of the way. The spent primer tray on my press was tight on the ram, and was lifting the primer arm as soon as the ram moved causing the bind. Some sanding on the plastic tray and it works fine.

Disappointing Press
Id hoped for a press that I could use to produce competition quality hand loads, and thats only happening with a LOT of wasted time. Im trying to seat the bullets to +- .001, just off the lands. Ive tried the Hornady match dies and the Redding Competition dies. The OAL varies by as much as +- .006. I though maybe it appeared off because I was measuring OAL and the tips might vary a little, so I checked them with the Redding Instant Indicator. The indicator dial confirmed the variation from round to round, and it measures off the ogive, so the condition of the tip would not affect the measurement. The lock and load feature is also irritating. I cant grasp it to get it locked in place while i thread the dies in or out. So for me, I waste more time fighting with the lock n load than it might save me. Ill fight with it for a few more reloading sessions and then Ill sell it if it doesnt magically get better.
