Designed in conjunction with PWS & FM Products, the Brownells BRN-180S® Complete Upper Receiver is the newest iteration of the BRN-180® Upper Receiver, which was inspired by the Armalite® AR-180 of the 1960s. The BRN-180S® shares a large chunk of components with the BRN-180® but introduces key features to improve reliability and usability in a short configuration.

With an entirely self-contained recoil system, the BRN-180® can be mounted to lower receivers without a buffer tube. This allows for easy compatibility with folding stocks and rear picatinny adapters. Recoil guide rods and buffer easily remove from the rear when removing the upper receiver from the lower. Bolt and carrier easily slide out when removing the charging handle at the rear. Large ejection port allows for ease of access for cleaning.

Lightweight barrel profile sits inside the slim handguard, making for an extremely lightweight package, even with the piston driven system. Top picatinny rail sits extremely low compared to other piston systems, allowing for broad compatibility with common AR-15 height optic mounts and sights. Barrels feature a 223 Wylde chamber to function with the broadest spectrum of 223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition.

Barrels do not come with a muzzle device. This allows for ease of installation of your preferred muzzle device, which is handy to reach an OAL of 16 inches for pined and welded devices of your preference.

Free float MLOK handguard is free floated, and can easily be removed with one large screw located on the bottom of the receiver. This screw engages the rear of the barrel, pulling the handguard tight up against the receiver. Easily removed handguard allows for quick access to the BRN-180® gas system.

U = Unsuppressed

S = Suppressed

User removal of the trunnion, barrel and trunnion screws is not recommended. Removal of the trunnion screws will void our Lifetime Guarantee.

All BRN-180 Upper Receiver Assemblies are test fired before final packaging. Upper may display signs of firing, such as or slight fouling inside.

All That And A Bag Of Chils
I’ve put just over 1,200 rounds of M855 on this 13.9” upper. This thing is SMOOTH and an ideal suppressor host. I knew I’d hate the factory charging handle so I ordered the AT3 Tactical aftermarket replacement and installed it before shooting. It’s just a slick setup with a Trijicon MRO, Midwest Industries folding sights, and a BCM foregrip. I’ll probably take this to a carbine course in the spring to put it thru its paces. The only malfunction I experienced was of my own making: I forgot to turn the gas regulator back to ‘U’ when I wanted to shoot unsuppressed. It short-stroked, so I turned the knob and it never balked again.

Haven't taken to the range yet,but I'm certain everything will be fine. Having trouble getting a pictany lower to work out yet,just can't justify your one and only offering for 300 some dollars. Was disappointed that a spare A2 flash hider I put on end of barrel ended up completely upside down when tight.

Great with one flaw
This is a game changer. Its Very accurate and it cycles great. I hope they keep new variants coming. One design flaw: They hold a small piece of a very critical rail part of the reciever with a rubber bumper that doubles as the screw to hold that rail piece in. There is no way that rubber between the screw and the rail piece can get a proper torque to permanently hold it in. It is a TERRIBLE design to an otherwise excellent product. There are aftermarket fixes for it thankfully. I hole the gen 3 version the omit that absurd flaw.

Nearly perfect
The ergonomics are noticeably better than garden variety AR-15's. Only the dogleg charging handle is problematic. Depending on the scope mount you use, the charging handle may stall against the mount. You can find aftermarket straight charging handles which takes care of clearance issue, but not from Brownells. If you intend to pin and weld a Surefire flash hider or muzzle brake (so you don't need ATF paperwork), you should know the barrel nut is too small to fit over Surefire muzzle devices.
