AR-15/M16 COLT™ 4X RETRO CARRY HANDLE SCOPE

AR-15/M16 COLT™ 4X RETRO CARRY HANDLE SCOPE Reviews & Ratings

Colt AR-15/M16 Colt™ 4X Retro Carry Handle Scope - Classic Design, Modern Optics

A Vintage Tribute That Performs Like New

The Colt AR-15/M16 Colt™ 4X Retro Carry Handle Scope is a faithful revival of the 1970s-era Colt carry-handle optics, crafted by the same Japanese manufacturer who made the originals. Brownells worked with them to recreate everything down to the iconic yellow inspection sticker-but under that retro exterior lies a thoroughly modern optical platform. Fully multi-coated lenses are waterproof and fog-proof, ensuring tough, reliable performance in all environments.

Direct-Mount Simplicity

This scope attaches directly to any standard AR-15/M16 carry handle without tools. Its integral mount makes installation fast and secure, preserving the classic silhouette while upgrading functionality.

Optics Tuned for the AR Platform

For precision out to distance, the scope features a simple duplex reticle with a click-adjustable elevation turret calibrated in BDC (ballistic drop compensation) increments tailored to .223/5.56 mm rounds (55–62 gr bullets). The turret settings align with common engagement ranges-from around 200 up to 500 yards-giving shooters reliable holdover without guesswork.

Sized for Classic Builds, Built Tough

With a 35 mm tube and compact dimensions-roughly 6.1″ long, 3.15″ tall, and 1.85″ wide-the Colt Retro 4X Scope retains that iconic form factor. It weighs approximately 12.7–13.3 oz and sports a matte black finish that complements vintage ARs. Its aluminum construction balances light weight with rugged strength.

Modern Clarity, Vintage Style

Shooters across forums praise this optic’s clear glass and authentic appearance. One user described their experience at the range as “flawless” in function, while others admire how it scratches onto the carry handle-just like the old-school originals-reinforcing the nostalgic aesthetic.

Mounted and zeroed in no time, but most importantly looks cool. 11/10 recommended.

Retro Scope
Have a repro XM177e2. Had one in Vietnam. Great carbine. Really enjoying it. My eyes are fading a little, so having a period scope for it makes the setup even better. Great job in reintroducing this piece of special ops hardware. Keep up the good work.

Colt Scope
Love the Colt Scope for my Colt AR15-A2. Fit perfectly on the carry handle. Look forward to taking it to the range and zero it in at 100 yards! Then heading to the CMP range to zero it in at 200, 300, and 600 yard range.

My 5th Colt4X!
I loved it so much that this is my 5th Colt retro scope— and I just ordered 6th one two days ago when I got a discount code— a total testament of my favor with the scope

Unbiased Review
First and foremost... This optic was designed and built for the XM15 / M16a1. The M16a1 had a shorter buttstock than the A2 which would obviously have an effect on eye relief. Again, this was designed for the A1, I don't know how or if it will perform on a removable carry handle. Next, I have an original to compare it to. The only differences I can find are the Brownells version doesn't fog up at the slightest provocation! And it doesn't have the lens covers that won't stay in place. I even went to the extreme of placing it in my freezer, then immediately exposing it to the desert sun. It remained crystal clear! Like the military issue version, I removed and replaced it on the same upper after zeroing and it was perfect again. As for the lens caps / dust covers, my originals were made of thin leather and didn't last long. I was able to find rubber caps that work. Another option would be to 3d print some with some sort of elastic between them to hold them in place. Almost anything would be an improvement over the ones I was issued. I received this as a gift so I'm not biased good or bad. Just stating my personal opinion. Would I buy this? Absolutely! But I wouldn't try using it on anything but the A1 or original carbine.

Great build quality
Just received it today. I have a couple of the knockoffs from the typical retailers. This one is a completely new standard of build quality compared to those. The glass is very clear and it feels premium in every way, right down the mount used to tighten it down. The cross hairs are as straight as they can possibly be. The adjustment knob on top has a nice tactile click that can be felt. My only complaint is the same as most people: eye relief. It's short. Shorter even than my unbranded copies. Overall, I'm very happy with it and would highly recommend it for those who understand the inherent limitations of this type of optic.

Really like it!
The scope mounted easily to the rifle and is sturdy. The initial settings took quite a bit of adjustment to get it set to my eye and get it zeroed in but that was just me I think. I'm 75 so my eyesight and steadiness is not that good even using a rest. Once set I was shooting a fair pattern at 100 yds. Another man at the range was curious about the setup so I let him try it. He was impressed with clarity and setup in general. I really do like the fact that I can still use the iron sights with the scope on. I used that to help with the initial zeroing. I really do like the scope and am well satisfied with the investment.

Mr
This is a great scope for the Colt AR15 carry handle. Glass is great, quality is fantastic, and there's an excellent story behind it. I found a guy who hand crafts retro leather scope covers for it that look just like what the 1970s version of this scope came with.
