AR-15 ASSEMBLED UPPER RECEIVER 16" 5.56MM MID-LENGTH

AR-15 ASSEMBLED UPPER RECEIVER 16" 5.56MM MID-LENGTH Reviews & Ratings

This AR-15 5.56mm 16" Mid-Length Upper Receiver from Aero Precision replicates the standard military M4 upper with one important addition. It has a longer, mid-length gas system that helps slow gas velocity for improved reliability in cycling (over the standard carbine gas system). You get same form-factor as an M4 with reduced risk of M4-type reliability problems. The AR-15 5.56mm 16" Mid-Length Upper Receiver comes fully assembled, lacking only a charging handle and bolt/carrier group, for shooters who prefer to choose those components to suit your specific needs. The 16" barrel of high-grade chrome-moly-vanadium carbon steel has a tough, corrosion- and scratch-resistant black QPQ finish (all other steel parts are Parkerized). It’s chambered for 5.56mm NATO military ammunition, so it will safely handle civilian .223 Remington ammo too.

  • Forged 7075 T6 aluminum receiver, hardcoat anodized, matte black
  • Ejection port cover & forward assist installed
  • MID-LENGTH gas system
  • Pinned gas block/front sight base with bayonet lug
  • .250" dia. pivot/takedown pin holes
  • Bolt/carrier group & charging handle NOT included
  • Twist rate: 1-7

Wrapped around the Aero Precision AR-15 5.56mm 16" Mid-Length Upper Receiver’s barrel is an extra-length (to cover the longer gas tube) M4-style polymer handguard with a standard A2 flash hider parked up front on the business end.

Great upper!
Threw this upper on my anderson AM 15 lower and dialed it in fairly easily at the range. Awesome nitride finish and shoots very accurate for a non free floater! Thanks to brownells for shipping it quick during the pandemic as well!

Good upper for the money
If you are looking for a reliable midlength 16 upper with a FSB this is it. Fit and finish were excellent. I installed a tool craft nitride BCG, a spare charging handle, and a front sling swivel I already had. I picked up a roll pin from the hardware store to hold the sling swivel in place and will not come out unless I intentionally remove it. Lastly, I installed a carry handle / sight. Another good iron sight alternative is the Daniel Defense A1.5 rear sight. Perfect fit for the Aero gen2 lower it went on. I built it with a rifle length buffer / A2 stock and added a VG6 gamma muzzle device. With the midlength gas system, it makes for a very soft shooting rifle. The balance is good even with the heavier A2 profile barrel. This rifle looks like a shorter A4 rifle. Accuracy was good for me shooting iron sights. 55 and 62 grain bullets grouped well with minimal impact change. Although the barrel warmed up, it did not transfer through the handguards. Simple but effective. And if you are wondering, the barrel markings are underneath the handguards which were easy to remove. Overall Good Upper for a KISS rifle. Aero puts out a quality product.

Good buy
I decided to get this upper over the PSA upper, because this upper seems to be better quality than the PSA upper, and I have a Aero Precision lower to install it on. I like the fact that the FSP is pinned on barrel, which is better than the ones that use screws to hold the FSP on barrel. I like the specs of the barrel over other brand uppers. So I think I got a good buy on this upper. I also like that it was shipped in a padded box. When I open box, a nice looking upper was inside, very good quality upper. I got 10% off the price with promo code, which makes this a super deal. I would buy again, and would recommend this upper to anyone. May buy another one for my next build if I can get free shipping and 10% off. I do have a bone to pick with Brownells, because they say if you subscribe, you get free shipping, and 10% off. I never received that discount. I came back to site another day and found a 10% off promo code, and bought this upper, the shipping was only $4.95, which is a good price. The VB5 code is only for free shipping, never got my 10 off after subscribing. Anyway, I am 100% satisfied with this upper so far.

Aero Precision Quality
The fit and finish of this midlength assembled upper is impressive, not that i would expect less from Aero Precision i have bought many upper and lowers from them. Their customer service is excellent in my opinion as well. All around good quality manufacturer.

Great value FSB assembled upper
I went with this upper for my first AR build. For those of us who love mid-length FSB uppers, it can be difficult to find one for the right price for the performance you get. This Aero upper is one of only a few that offer a FSB mid-length gas barrel with a QPQ finish, which I wanted to give a try instead of another chrome lined barrel. For what you get this upper really is a goldilocks in bang-for-the-buck. The only thing I wish for differently was if Aero offered this upper with a lighter contour barrel, but honestly for the money the government profile contour works. I could have spent significantly more money to get a different barrel and have a FSB pin job done, but I doubt I would have gained more in value. If you want an upper with a good mid-length gas FSB barrel and a nice QPQ finish while being a step up from PSA, I would go with this again in a heart beat.

Pretty good so far
I just received the upper. It's good looking and matches my lowers. I installed a Brownell's BCG, a Daniel Defense A1.5 rear sight and a BCM medium charging handle. It doesn't make for an economy receiver group, coming close to $500 with the needed parts. I did a function test, and it passed with 100% performance. The combination of the upper and an A1 fixed stocked lower make for a very handy mid length carbine. It's as handy as can be without being an SBR. It is missing a sling swivel, so I had to order a GG&G adapter from another supplier. The desired Colt swivel was back-ordered through Brownell's. In fact every time I wanted to order the Colt part, it has been out of stock. That is the reason for the loss of a star.

Basic, tough, functional, economical
There aren't many economical options for mid length uppers with front sight bases. I chose this because of the barrel specs and the standard handguards. Nitride finish is very nice on the barrel. The front sight post hole on mine is came drilled and tapped all the way through, so you could add a set screw to lock the front sight post if you wanted. I did have to swab the bore quite a bit to get rid of the manufacturing residue. The only issue I had was the dust cover wouldn't latch properly, but I fixed it myself with about 3 minutes of careful file work.

Meh
I hope to believe that this is good barrel, and all will be ok,, i was very disappointed that the barrel is not marked with caliber or twist rate

Not up to the Aero Precision reputation.
I have been building AR-15s for a quarter century, with a mandatory 10 year break in there for good measure. I have long preferred Aero Precision uppers, lowers, and parts kits. This upper is disappointing for several reasons. The bayonet lug is oversized and won't mount an M7 bayonet; the barrel has no markings, forcing an old guy like me to remember its caliber and twist rate, and there is no front sling mount, although the fittings are there. One reason to buy a mid-length carbine upper is the ability to properly mount a bayonet, but Aero dropped the ball with this upper.
