AR-15/M16 UPPER RECEIVER LAPPING TOOL

AR-15/M16 UPPER RECEIVER LAPPING TOOL Reviews & Ratings

AR-15/M16 UPPER RECEIVER LAPPING TOOL

The Brownells AR-15 Upper Receiver Lapping Tool is made of a cold-rolled steel that chucks into a 3/8” hand drill to easily “square up” the upper receiver face on your AR-15. This helps ensure precise mating of barrel and receiver for added accuracy. To use, coat the face of receiver with aluminum-oxide lapping compound; the extra-long pilot slides into the bolt carrier tunnel to help maintain concentricity with the receiver. Chuck up the drill, and begin spining the lapping tool until the desired result is achieved!

Softer than the aluminum receivers
This tool is a GREAT idea - but poorly implemented. It's 3 biggest problems are: 1) The cutting/bearing surface wore out after about 10 AR15 uppers. By #12, the surface of the tool had such a deep round gouge wore in it, that it didn't even touch the flat face of the receiver. 2) Caused by the same problem as #1 - the stud is so soft, that just hand tightening into a portable drill chuck has gouged the stud. It is now impossible to get a secure fit. It was also too short for most hand drills to grasp. 3) Even when new, the stud was not true to the pilot shaft. I suspect it was bumped in shipping, and being so soft - the stud bent. If this were made with better steel and a longer stud, it would be a 5-star tool. This is atypical for Brownell's quality.

Careful
Easily damaged using drill chuck, will wobble and destroy an upper receiver. Also easy for lapping compound to migrate into receiver and strip teflon coating. Very tight fit, couldn't find an oil that worked well but didn't try a mil-spec grease which might work better given the pressure. Don't use this tool if you can't spare the upper and try again on another.
