AR-15/M16 UPPER RECEIVER LAPPING TOOL

AR-15/M16 UPPER RECEIVER LAPPING TOOL Reviews & Ratings

AR-15/M16 UPPER RECEIVER LAPPING TOOL

The Brownells AR-15 Upper Receiver Lapping Tool is made of a cold-rolled steel that chucks into a 3/8” hand drill to easily “square up” the upper receiver face on your AR-15. This helps ensure precise mating of barrel and receiver for added accuracy. To use, coat the face of receiver with aluminum-oxide lapping compound; the extra-long pilot slides into the bolt carrier tunnel to help maintain concentricity with the receiver. Chuck up the drill, and begin spining the lapping tool until the desired result is achieved!

Dont do it- destroyed my uppers
Attempted a precision build for a criterion barrel and matched matched bolt. Intended to lap the receiver face, bed with 620 loctite, center the gas tube, dimple the gas block and take all other precautions to insure as much accuracy and durability as possible. Barrel was going to be tight to the point of needing the receiver heated, so I was confident as possible in the build. I used 180 grit lapping compound on the face and liberal amounts of CLP inside the receiver while being very careful to keep the lapping compound on the face only, working very slowly by hand. Using this tool destroyed an Aero FDE special Texas edition M4e1 upper that was part of a matched set and two other Aero lowers. By the time I had taken 80% of the finish off the face the bolt itself had removed the finish all the way to bare aluminum in several places inside receiver. Its now ruined, and another to match the lower is expensive and indefinitely backordered. Didnt know I was removing the interior anodizing till I cleaned them up when finished. Do NOT use this tool unless you are willing to throw away a receiver. Send it out to be lapped by a professional. Very disappointed Brownells would sell this.

Something to Consider
During the first use of the tool tiny grooves formed in the squaring portion of the tool. I used 600 grit aluminum oxide lapping compound, and operated the tool for a total of 2.5 minutes. This was obviously not the correct procedure. There are so many videos out there about using the tool, and people used anywhere from 180 grit to 600 grit, and operated the tool from seconds to minutes. In my opinion, Brownells should have a warning in the product description about damaging the tool if the incorrect procedure is used.

This tool has serious problems
Tool is either out of round or is too large for every upper I've tried to insert it into. Complete waste of time and money. I expected better from Brownells.

out of spec
Bought this a while back in anticipation of assembling a match AR. When I received it there was a burr, as if it had been dropped or hit hard, on the leading edge. I cleaned the burr off and - it wouldn't fit into either AR receiver. I tried moly grease, red grease - nope. I put it up and it sat in my tool box for over a year. I was set to build 5 hunting uppers in various calibers and tried it again - would NOT slip into any of the receivers though all barrels were nice and tight slip fits in all receivers. Took it to a local machine shop that said they'd take it down to a slip fit in the receivers I brought in but the set up and work charges were quite a bit more than I paid for the tool. NOT up to Brownells usual high standards.
