steel white
I have been using steel white for 20 years. Always does a great job. Mix about 15 to 1. I never expect it to work in an instant. I put it in and go about other work. check it in about 3 hours and its done. I reblue about 10 to 12 guns a month. When it stops working I toss it (6 to 8 guns) and mix new batch. I always rinse parts with water and blow them dry with compressed air. Trick is to wire brush after drying. Parts will not rust. I can wait for weeks before polishing. No rust
It Works
I use this product to remove fine rust and old bluing in preparation for polishing and bluing. The instructions should emphasis in bold, "heating mixed product decreases time needed to work". A mixing ratio of 3 or 4 to one also works faster. Also, this never leaves a part shiny white as the product name may insinuate, but a dull gray. A polishing is required to get it ready to blue to the shine you desire. You still need to do some work. It really works nice to remove the rust.

used to redo 3 single shots shotguns and a semi auto shotgun they were sitting in a closet for years mixed the solution a lil strong as soon as placed them in the bath the blueing started to vanish along with the rust
This product works!
Follow the directions, and watch the old blue disappear. I polished the treated metal with #0000 steel wool, before bluing. I could not be happier with the finished O/U barrels.
Try something else for heavy rust
I cleaned a double gun up by sanding then wiping down thoroughly with laquer thiner. I had rust remaining in pits and didn't want to sand down to them by removing metal so I thought I'd try this stuff. I put it in about an 18-1 solution of this stuff (20-1 was recommended) and immersed the barrels and receiver for 30 minutes unheated. What came out? A HEAVILY rusted barrel! All the work I'd done removing surface rust prior to using this stuff was wasted as it rusted the barrels and receiver. It did remove most of the blue, but again, instead of removing rust, it rusted the barrel, quickly.
Waste of money
Mixed according to directions at 5 to one. Tried to use it on a thoroughly degreased 1911 slide and S&W revolver. Neither had much rust, just wanted to remove the blue prior to polishing. After 1 hour no discernible effect. Dumped mixture and Re mixed at a measured 5 to one and tried again. By the second hour there was some slight progress but not much. Threw it out and polished by hand.
