Ranging a Cimarron SAA
I had a .45 Colt Cimarron SAA that I needed to fit a .45ACP to. After confirming the other required measurements were within spec I was left with the question of whether the cylinder was in range. I was easliy able to confirm this with this quality tool.
Would you recommend this?
Yes, I would recommend to a friend
Perfect for Ruger .45 bore
I was hesitant to purchase because of the other review but needed to verify cylinder to barrel alignment when I fitted a new oversize cylinder latch to my Ruger New Model Blackhawk .45 that is less than a year old. I thought I had a clean bore but this Range Rod made it clear I had a leading problem. After several passes with my Lewis Lead Remover the bore was clean and the range rod worked perfectly.
A tool needed by all Gun Shops
This is the perfect tool for all gun shops whether you do sales, trades or gunsmithing. Any trade taken in should be checked and it does not hurt to check the timing on new guns for they do sometimes come in with a problem. You would not want to be responsible for hurting a customer. Great tool, great quality.
A Good to Have Tool
After reading through Kuhnhausen's "The Colt Single Action Revolvers" the author mentions checking the replica single actions for cylinder alignment. I didn't consider this an issue but out of curiosity I ordered the 44-40 Range Rod. My Cimarron Frontier 44-40 (Pietta) cylinder alignment is good. Current replica single actions are an improvement over the ones when his manual was composed. After tuning a cylinder bolt it occurred to me that the Range Rod is a handy item to keep the cylinder aligned in order to fit bolt stop height. Item deserves 5 Stars but a shorter handle would be convenient as an accessory.
Range Rod Kit Plastic Case and inserts are really really bad
When one spends this type of money for a few cylinders of steel they are hopeful. The range rods have been helpful but the case and foam inserts that it comes with are horrible. The foam inserts in the brown plastic case are the worst. The range rods move all over the place are not retained properly. The person who thought of this design needs to get a new job.
Too big for Ruger .45 bore
At .4415 diameter this rod head is too big to fit two different Ruger New Model Black Hawks revolvers that I have tried to use it on. It simply wont go further than about a quarter inch down the muzzle of a very clean barrel. Have since read elsewhere that .439 should be max for Ruger .45 range rod. Perhaps it would work on other firearms.
Thread size not compatible
I thought the thread size would match one of the many cleaning rods I have but it does not. Now I have to spend more money, thanks Brownells. Cons: Needs a Brownells rod.
Not Pleased
I purchased this 17 cal. range rod for my Truaus 17 HMR revolver and it is useless it won't even start to enter the barrel. Would not order again! NOT A HAPPY CAMPER.
Not Happy
I purchased this range rod a while back to use at a later date. When I got it out to use it, it was useless. It would not even start in my Taurus 22/22 mag. revolver. I would not order again. NOT HAPPY!!!
