We actually tracked down the original company that manufactured the Colt® AR-15 optics of the 1970s and asked them to build a new one for us as close to the original as possible - right down the yellow inspection stickers. Like the Retro Rifles themselves, the Brownells Retro 4x Optic has updated technology under the hood. The Retro 4x Carry Handle Optic sports a simple, intuitive fine duplex reticle, like the original, and an elevation turret with BDC (ballistic drop compensated) clicks that closely match modern .223/5.56 55gr and 62gr ammo. As its name indicates, the Retro 4x comes with an integral carry handle mount that easily attaches to most AR-15 carry handles - no tools required. Old school for old guy

If you were buying scopes for ARs in the early 80s you know the Colt scope was the coolest. It worked ok and looked right on the rifle. By the end of the 80s guys were cutting off the carry handle and mounting scopes. When the flatops hit the market seemed like no one wanted the carry handles, or carry handle scopes anymore. Fast forward to 2018, I bought a Retro M16 and I remembered how nice that weapon pointed, carried and how accurate it was. But by that time my eyesight was no where near what it was in the 80s I bought this Retro scope and was very happy with it. My Retro 16/scope can consistently keep high quality 55gr ammo at 1.25” at 100yards. With the scope mounted I even rolled prairie dogs at 400 yards! This involved a bit of luck considering the size of the crosshairs. Mounted, the scope seems loose. But I can pull it out of the safe and the poi is the same. I can’t explain it, but it works. I enjoy the Retro pair a lot.

Needs improvement.

First the good part. The Retro 4x scope I purchased from Brownell's did not have the white Retro 4X logo stamp on the top. Just a complete matte black finish. The lens were clear and it had a thick duplex crosshair that's easy to pick up in low light places like the woods. And last it has Brownell's life warranty and outstanding return policy. Now for the not so good and my reason for 3 stars. First the hole in my Colt CAR-15 carry handle were this scope base bolt goes is 7mm in size. The bolt size on the scope's base is only 5mm in diameter, this needs to be updated with a larger diameter bolt for a more secure attachment. Next the scopes eye relief is very short, only about two and a half inches, needs to be at least five inches. And last, the main reason I returned the scope for a refund was when adjustments are made to the elevation the set windage moves. On mine when I moved the elevation adjustment knob up the windage moved to the right. With these cheap friction adjustments a ballistic style crosshair would work much better.

Nice scope with an eh fitting mount.

I may have gone to a solid 5 on this if not for the sloppy fit in the carry handle. Now I put this on a PM A1 Military upper and a CAPCO Military contract A2 upper and this did not fit flush on either. No where near as snug perfect fit of a non repro version. Even when tight there is an ever so slight side to side movement. The edges of the mount have almost slight rounded edge. If I come across a real mount base from an old busted colt scope I may try to swap it out but for now it's a Great repro scope that lacks with the mount fitment. I have an actual Colt 3x and the only movement I get is a tad forward or rear sliding prior to tightening. No side to side wobble. Not sure if this has an effect if you use a retro brownells A1 upper, it may be machined specific for those. Well I'm gonna give it go anyway. Could just be the coating as well and may flatten out for a better fit. In the pic you will also see the Retro brownells handguards. Those are pretty darn good for repros. I would recommend to a friend with the caveat of "it may not fit perfect in the carry handle, other that its a decent scope"
