RIFLE ACTION WRENCH & HEAD FOR REMINGTON 700

RIFLE ACTION WRENCH & HEAD FOR REMINGTON 700 Reviews & Ratings

BROWNELLS RIFLE ACTION WRENCH & HEAD FOR REMINGTON 700

The Brownells Remington 700 Rifle Action Wrench & Head is a professional-grade action wrench system engineered to provide maximum receiver support during barrel installation, barrel removal, and custom rifle builds. Unlike conventional action wrenches that apply force at limited contact points, this advanced system completely surrounds and supports the receiver ring and recoil lug, helping distribute torque forces evenly to reduce the risk of costly receiver damage.

Designed specifically for Remington 700-pattern actions, the two-piece head fully encircles the cylindrical receiver for nearly complete surface engagement, dramatically increasing gripping area while helping prevent twisted bolt ways, distorted receivers, and other damage that can occur during barrel work. The precision-machined head provides an exact receiver fit, while the solid steel base delivers the strength required for demanding gunsmithing applications.

The upper head indexes on the forward guard screw and helps properly position the recoil lug during barrel installation. In addition, the double-angle head design accommodates both factory recoil lugs and popular tapered aftermarket recoil lug designs, making the system suitable for factory rifles, custom builds, and precision rifle projects. Double-angle design accepts factory lug or Tubb and Shilen tapered design.

Excellent Tool
I just finished using the action wrench heads to remove a barrel. One blow and I was done. I will definitely buy a complete set for my small ring Mauser.

Rem. 700 Action Wrench by Brownells
My first trip to the range this spring I brought "fire formed" reloaded ammo for the wrong rifle. My first round / cartridge got seriously stuck in the rifles chamber. I decided that was a good excuse to change out the original Rem. 700 barrel with a new replacement. I ordered a Brownells Rem.700 action wrench and it worked beautifully. I carefully locked my original barrel in a "Viper" vise using small aluminum shims fabricated from flashing material. Installed a 1-1/2" long 1/4"-28 grade 8 hex bolt (from Ace Hardware.) into the action wrench to hold half the action wrench head to the receiver until I finished assembling the whole wrench to the receiver. Helps align the recoil lug to the receiver. Using a 24" breaker bar, made out of 1-1/4" black pipe, I was able to break free the receiver using about 80 lbs. of torque. Replaced the original barrel with a Rem/Age barrel using a Savage barrel nut wrench and the Brownells action wrench. The whole operation, from beginning to finish, went smoothly and flawlessly. Right tool for the job made all the difference. Now I'm thinking about swapping out two other Rem. 700 barrels. Great tool and it does the job flawlessly. Highly recommend.

The Best Action Wrench You Can Buy
I purchased this with the Remington 700 heads, and absolutely am in love with this tool! I absolutely love the cut-out for the recoil lug to keep it aligned properly when installing the barrel. Keep in mind that the cut-out is slighly wider than a factory Remington lug, and must be shimmed in order to keep it perfect. If you are using an aftermarket lug with tapered sides, the fit is outstanding! I've used this to assemble/disassemble dozens of 700's so far, and this wrench has yet to even scratch one! The indexing hole that accepts an action screw is a nice touch - just be sure to order an extra screw to use with the wrench, because really really stubborn actions can slightly warp the screw. I'd rather replace a $3 screw than to have the wrench slip on the receiver! I was using the Surgeon barrel wrench, but after getting in an older 700 which ultimately required heat and 250+ ft.lbs or torque to break loose - the Surgeon tool would have mangled the receiver! I have yet to see ANY other action wrench out there better than this one! Also, be sure to get a matching Brownell's Barrel Vise!

Works like it should
If one reads the instructions and uses the tool like it was intended there are no issues with this tool. The tool works perfectly and has never damaged any receiver it was used on.

Good Design Wrench
This is a very useful tool once you figure out exactly how to use it. The instructions are somewhat vague, incomplete and could be made much more useful by adding some photos or illustrations (as could most of Brownell's instruction sheets). The directions also do not mention that it may be necessary to heat the receiver over the threaded area in order to get the barrel to release. The guys who end up bending and warping their receivers need to heed this trick. You should not have to apply much muscle, and if you do you are stressing the receiver. I recommend you use an electric heat gun and not a torch to heat the receiver. If the same barrel is going to be re-installed, I usually make a small registration line on the barrel and receiver along the bottom side where it does not show. This can be used during re-installation of the barrel as a reference point to assure the same seating depth.

Might have to fix it before you can use
I got my wrench after being backordered. The bolt on one side would not thread in. The thread must be hosed so I will try and fix via a tap wrench. Just be aware a head of time you may have to repair the new wrench before you can use it.

you get what you pay
product was used on both a new and older Rem 700. Very difficult to realign recoil lug since the "action pin hole" is used by the wrench. Slightly warped the action on my older firearm... oh well.
