Nice heat shield once you get it installed
So I've had this 590A1 (20" heavy barrel, ghost ring sights) for quite some time, and I always thought it needed a heat shield, but the online story was not an encouraging one. People couldn't find them, and they don't come with the other pieces needed, etc. I finally dove in and ordered the 16335P from Brownell's since they allow you to backorder. Prior to that I had a pleasant but unfruitful chat with Mossberg's customer service (not in stock, no backorders allowed).
I have a Mossberg 500 tactical that I picked up a few years ago and it came with the heat shield already installed, so I just removed one of the screws and nuts from it to take to the hardware store with me. I was able to find suitable hardware at a local farm/ranch supply. The other part is the plastic spacer, and Brownell's had those in stock.
So, if you want one of these for your 590A1, go ahead and order it. Expect to wait up to a few months for it to ship.
The hardware on my 500 were 6-32 7/8" cap screws, and I was able to find 6-32 1" cap screws that work fine.
The spacer is stock # 000002708 and you just have to cut it to fit.
Installing the heat shield took some fiddling, but I was able to slide it on the barrel from the breech end and using a piece of vinyl sheet protector to prevent the barrel from getting scraped by the brackets, snapped the front piece on with just one blow from my palm. I then re-seated the barrel in the action to make sure the spacing was correct, installed the plastic spacer with my shiny new hardware, and it's done. All told it took less than an hour.
So, what are you waiting for?
Heat Shield Fit and Where to get Mounting Hardware
This is the only heat shield that will fit a Mossberg 590S with a 20" barrel. This particular model has a heavy walled barrel to be able to accommodate the choke tubes. The 590 A1 also has a heavy walled barrel and is the reason that this heat shield works on the 20" 590S. The heat shield offered on Mossberg's website parts page for the 590 does not fit. You can also call Mossberg's Technical support and they will send you the mounting hardware for $21.00. Got the hardware within a week or so. The heat shield took nearly 6 months to arrive. This wasn't Brownells fault. Mossberg was just way behind.
Get a grip Gentlemen
That's why our saviour made Home Depot and Lowe's. Beta men, go buy a few screws and nylon lock nuts and figure it out. Worked for my 590A1, Shockwave, and my 930. Geez, you want everything in life handed to you or would you like some tinker time?
Great piece but Hardware is not included
After installing a Heat Shield on another's 590A1, I decided mine needed one too! It's a bit of a tricky install, but the end result looks great. The biggest pain is ordering all of the pieces separately, and if one is out of stock you may left waiting months like I was.
Well Built, Limited Functionality
As the other reviewers mentioned, this product inexplicably comes with NO mounting hardware. Make sure to order the spacer, bolts, and nuts at the same time as the heatshield because those items are also special orders and take the same 8 weeks to ship. Something else that isnt apparent until you get the heatshield in your hands is that it will not slide over a barrel with ghost ring sights (its designed to be installed on a barrel with bead sights). If you have ghost rings sights (like I did), you have to use a mallet to pound the front clips over the skinny portion of the barrel up front, but far enough backward that the rear clips are just behind the rear of the barrel. This does mar the finish, but not too badly. I then slid the heatshield forward, using brute force to pry apart the rear clips enough so that they slide over the rear end of the barrel. This is a pain to install, but when bolted down the heatshield is rock solid and keeps your hands out of contact with the hot barrel. Ultimately, unless youre planning on mounting and actually using a bayonet on your 590A1, I do not think it is worth the expense or hassle to install.
Poor craftsmanship. Inelligible Lettering
Poor craftsmanship.
Inelligible lettering. Ordered a replacement and the replacement they sent me has the same deffect. Even though the packing slip has a highlighted note requesting inspection of the lettering prior to shipping. So either the "inspector" has low standards or they just don't care about the request and about shipping poor quality products.
Incomplete
Paid $50 for a heat shield, waited over a month to get it, and no mounting hardware???? THANKS!
No mounting equipment
No mounting equipment (spacer, screw, nuts) comes with this making it somewhat useless.
