Control the gas on the M1A/M14 rifle
If you are looking to get the gas flow just right for the M1A/M14 whether you are shooting suppressed or as the rifle is issued, this is ideal product. When running a suppressed M1A/M14, this is an absolute essential item required to run it suppressed. Even if you are just wanting to get the best possible accuracy out of the inherently accurate rifle system, this addition is worth every penny that it costs. Still in use today, with some of the best shooters, marksmen, and riflemen, that is a testament of the M1A/M14 battle rifle of wood and steel.
Must Have
Must have part for an m1 if you want to shoot it a lot or don't reload and don't have access to surplus. I'm going to tune mine for modern 180 grain hunting loads, since that's the most common ammo I can get. Better to use new ammo too because it's not corrosive or dirty. If you don't have the tool to change the plugs out, a large flathead screwdriver will work. Set screw is a little tricky to get started, but it works well.
Hard to install Adjust Gas Plug, M1A,
I bought this product a couple weeks ago to use on my Spfld Arm. inc. M1A and had trouble screwing it in a Military spec. gas cylinder...at first I thought that it was the wrong thread, but a closer comparison revealed that they were correct, just super tight....I used Krills oil on both threads and turning it a 1/8 of a turn at a time using a 1/2" combo wrench it went home....I took the weapon to the range and ran some Tulammo through it. I had to adjust (tune) the valve per instructions and the M1a operated great...it dropped the cases 2 feet away, kinda just barely making it out of the weapon.....no strain on the op rod at all...it is worth the money if you consider how much an M14 op rod cost to replace....
Makes the M1-A and M-1 Garand New Rifles
I have used the Schuster Adjustable Gas System in both the M1-A and the Garand for several years for general shooting and load developement. It is quite simeple to use. Open the gas adjustment screw to the wide open spot by screwing it out until it is within a turn or two of coming out the front end of the gas valve housing. Shoot a round. Obviously, the rifle is not going to go through its semi-auto functions as the valve is venting all the gas. Open bolt, eject the empty case and lock the action open for safe work at the muzzle! Turn the gas valve adjustment screw inward a couple of turns. Fire a shot. The action may start to work, depending upon the gunpowder you are using and bullet weight. Repeat the process turning the adjustment screw in again. Gently, easy does it! Don't turn too far... As you turn the adjustment screw in and then fire a shot, the bolt may start to come back. Repeat the process of screwing the adjustment screw downward. Fire a shot. This time, the bolt may eject the case and close on an empty chamber. Repeat the process. Now turn the adjustment screw fractions of a complete turn downward. Gently now... The bolt may almost lock open! Repeat the process and this time you may be delighted to find the rifle has performed all the semi-auto functions and is locked open, waiting for the next round. NOW, do not change the setting of the adjusment screw. The rifle should lock open again at the next shot. If it does, you are set FOR THIS POWDER CHARGE AND BULLET COMBINATION. If it does not perform all the functions, turn the adjustment screw downward again and lock it in place with the lock nut the is supplied. Make sure you don't get the allen wrench in so far that as you are adjusting the adjustment screw the same time you are trying to set the lock screw on it! Some fine touch is required for this operation! You will use a little more ammo using this system but you will have a rifle that will operate at minumum impact on itself. Do your chronographing at this point. THEN, REMEMBER TO OPEN THE ADJUSTMENT SCREW ALL THE WAY UP TO START OVER WHEN YOU CHANGE LOADS! Maybe you can figure out a way to reset it to the load you just fired. I have not. I just open it up and start again. I love it!
Great product!
I ordered this for my new Scout Squad. simple install. Took it to the range, it may take several shots to get it set, (normal), from there you're good to go! Worth the money hands down! Great upgrade in my opinion.
Work great!
Using this to adjust the recoil of the op rod, you really can fine tune your M1A with this plug. Works really well, all you have to do is follow the instructions.
Great device
I really like my adjustable gas plug. It softens up the cycling of my garand and lets me shoots commercial ammo safely. The only downside is that I couldn't screw it in with a 1/4 in. drive socket and had to grind a tool out of an old reciprocating saw blade to install it. Overall it is very good.
Disappointed
I'm very disappointed in the overall quality of this product. The wrench I used to remove the original gas plug doesn't fit the Schuster gas plug, the adjustable plug was jammed in too tight (possibly cross threaded?) and the Allen wrench provided doesn't fit it. Once I figure out how to remove the plug and I'm able to make adjustments I'm sure it'll be fine..
