M14/M1A/M1 GARAND RIFLE ACTION WRENCH & HEAD

M14/M1A/M1 GARAND RIFLE ACTION WRENCH & HEAD Reviews & Ratings

The only commercially available action wrench system that surrounds and supports the receiver ring and recoil lug to distribute potentially damaging torque forces equally. The solid steel base has a unique, machined relief to clear the recoil lug on most Mauser-type bolt action rifles and, the individual, bolt-on Heads are machined to provide an exact fit around and against the receiver ring or barrel nut for each of the firearm models listed. Together, they support the receiver in a ring of steel and greatly increase the amount of surface gripping area to totally eliminate twisted bolt “ways” or damaged, ruined receivers. This is the most advanced, complete, professional-quality, Action Wrench System. With it, you can prevent expensive receiver damage on MOST popular rifle actions, including military models, plus, models for selected handguns. Supports top, side and bottom of the forward ring of the receiver. Fits most variations of these rifles including the BM-59.

The Correct Tool for the Job
This head is but one of many that can be used with the action wrench. The entire line of heads are the correct tools for holding the receiver for re-barreling and installation work. alternate tightening the bolts on each side to give a uniform head-to-handle gap!

Crucial for changing M1A,M14 barrel
Back in the 1970s well before Brownells finally started to make these, unless you could find and buy a USGI armorers tool set, you had to make these. Not easy to do unless you understood machining tools. These are crucial to changing a barrel on the M14 or M1As. Brownells has once again made the difference. Read how to do all this in "M14 Unclassified" coming in 2012. Already used to change two barrels to Kreigers

M1A Wrench
So far I have used it to install new barrels onto new receivers. The fit of the M1A/M1 head seems to be good. It would be nice if the handle were longer. However, the main problem with the wrench is that, with the vise mounted to a work bench and the barrel set properly with the front sight base at 12:00 o'clock, the handle of the wrench is down at 5:00. This means to apply the torque to install the barrel one has to get on the floor and pull the handle towards you. This is an awkward position and very difficult to get the final alignment. Also, instead of putting the force to the table in a downward direction, the force is sideways and most tables are not built to best handle force in that direction.

poor fit for M1a
Nothing great about a wrench with a bad fit. The top of the wrench is cut too shallow for a good grip and the curve has numerous irregularities. This is partially why the directions tell you to use brass shims! (not revealed in the addvertisement) I just hope that I didn't twist my action! Look elsewhere!
