First time user
Frist time user, I did not realize I need a special hook -up on my phone, I-Phone 6, it will not work with this. But I could read the numbers from the bench. It's must if you are going to reload and check how loads are performing compared to the charts!
Takes the guesswork out of reloading
This is my first Chrono and I'm glad I decided on the Caldwell Premium. I reload all my practice/target ammo for my handguns and have always wondered how much velocity is affected by changes in powder charges and OAL (beyond what is shown in manuals). I have a 9mm CZ 75 Compact that doesn't like XTP or HAP bullet profiles at 1.125" min OAL. I have to load these at 1.090" for the CZ and reduce the powder charge to what I guessed was a safe load. Now I know. This Chronograph is a huge help in developing loads. The free app lets you enter bullet weights and types by MFG, my own notes for powder charges, OAL, etc., and groups can be saved for later reference. The accuracy seems excellent; rounds loaded to Lee and Lyman specs are within 10 to 20 fps of the velocities given in the manuals.
Easy to Use
Sets up easily and provides quick and accurate readings. Manufacturer recommends using the included IR led screens with AC power and I fired over 50 rounds with only one error reading. Made load development a snap, and I liked that the tripod and IR screens were included. One comment, the machine activated while in the carrying case and drained the battery, so I would recommend removing the battery after use.
Awesome Chronograph
Purchased this chronograph after my last one bit the dust... no help to me. I wanted something that had a tripod, and was very pleased to see the ability to plug into your phone/ipad for the results. I took it out on an overcast day, expected it to give results 50% of the time. I usually have my Chronograph set 10ft from the end of my barrel for best results, however, today I was reduced to about 3ft... I didn't expect it to work, however, it worked great! It did throw an error (counted as a second shot) from the burned powder, however, it did record the shot, and accurately. The beauty of this kit is the ability to record your data. You can put all of your load info in (minus powder and such), but it will also give you energy as well. It saves it to your device, and you can refer back to it, excellent feature. I will definitely buy this again when I need another one, but I hope that is not for a long time...
OK, but improvements needed
The Smart phone interface is handy, but it needs to be wireless (a 20 foot cord is a real pain). It needs an LED display, the current display is hard to see in a dimmly lit environment. The tripod is too short unless bench shooting. And, It is really cheaply made. There is no way to confirm accuracy, I guess we just take their word for it. The light curtain is a good idea, but there needs to be a better way of powering it (again, cords are a pain at the range).
