Unbiased Review
I believe this is a "type D" buttstock. While it looks identical to the originals, it is obviously stronger.
As for colors... the black is the correct and exact matt finish. It will however become somewhat "glossy" over time with extreme handling, just like the originals. If you need to restore it, or handguards / pistol grip to factory fresh look, Duplicolor brand, High Heat Engine Enamel in "Low Gloss Black" is an EXACT match. For "distressing" or a well used look, randomly polish with a mild grit rubbing / polishing compound, or toothpaste on a rag.
Don't laugh, that actually works quite well.
The green is the perfect shade, texture / degree of gloss... which is between flat and semi-gloss.
For touch-up / refinish I suggest Rustolium brand, Camouflage 2X Ultra Cover in Deep Forest Green.
This color isn't exact but (95%) close enough to match handguards / pistol grips with an unpainted buttstock on the same rifle.
The brown is completely wrong for an original A1. The brown is correct for modern weapons.
As for the original color, I've used Rustolium brand Red Oxide Primer, then "distressed" it by blotting with a rag soaked in common mineral spirits. Believe it or not, that's pretty close to how they looked when leaving the factory.
Once again, buffing may also be needed for a "used" look if that is your goal.
The "reddish-brown" wasn't a popular color & didn't last long before being upgraded to O.D. Green, mostly used on the 600 Series USAF rifles so it's extremely rare today.
Overall, regardless of your color selection, these are the highest quality I've found. You won't be disappointed.
green labeled box green stock inside
most of the other reviews cover stuff. It came with proper A1 screw. Once snugged up there were no rattles. Did it fit perfectly with the contours of which ever lower I put it on? Nope. Was it a dead on color match to green grip and handguards? Nope. Is it perfectly usable and looks better than anything I was issued in the Army, yes. In a few years of use will it look like the rifles issued in the Army, probably. Very happy with the furniture set.
Not bad at all
easy install, comfortable on the shoulder. fits pretty good.
I like these in modern plastics.
The modern plastic these are made of is tough stuff! Thats what I like the best about them. Some have complained about rattling of the inside pieces, but I have not found that to be a problem, as once tightened up it all snugs down well with no rattles. No need to fill them with expanding foam unless you want the extra weight to them and maybe sound deadener. I've ordered two (one brown and one green) the green is still in transit; the brown one fits great. I fully expect the green to be good as well.
Well made
I purchased this buttstock for a new build. I live in the People's Republic of California, where commissar Newsome and company have declared that adjustable buttstocks are verboten. I wanted a well-made A1 style stock, that is just a little bit shorter than the A-2 style. The polymer looks solid and high quality. The plastic butt plate is rounded and comfortable on the shoulder. The stock fits snugly onto the lower receiver and rifle buffer tube with no movement or rattle. The instructions for installation were clear.
Exactly what it says
With a bit of trepidation due to some of the reviews I waited until this stock went on sale to purchase. After installation Ive encountered none of the problems mentioned from other users. Yes, the stock reinforcing piece rattles when its not installed but as soon as I tightened it down absolutely no rattle remained. (And no I didnt have to tighten it anywhere past what I would consider reasonable) The stock itself feels sturdy, and while Im sure with enough pressure I could deform it I encountered none of the flimsy feeling some have reported. There are small visible seam blemishes along the top of mine, but if I wanted to I believe five minutes with a bit of sandpaper would remove all traces. Personally I dont mind, but it is something to be aware of if you do. I think anyone in the market for an A1 LOP stock would not be dissatisfied.
Good A2 stock alternative!
Good stock if the A2 is just too long for you but want to stay fixed stock. My rifle feels more right with the stock being shorter. Running a PSA 20" upper currently.
Way better than the negative reviews.
I was leary because of the 3 star reviews. Quite frankly the poor reviews should not dissuade the buyer who desires a A1 length stock. Bottom line: Cost, length and configuration make this an excellent stock. I am not a retro builder so I did not buy it for that purpose. The A1 is a shorter stock than the A2, that is why I bought it. If you want a longer stock buy an A2. The butt stock appearance is no different in quality than the Rock River arms or Colt stocks I have. That being said it is all black and not the gray color of the A2. Fit and finish are good to excellent. The buffer screw comes with loctite applied which will make installation and turning of the screw difficult. Use the correct screwdriver and you will have no issues. Yes the stock will rattle prior to being tightened down. Once installed no rattle, no loose issues, fitment is on par with any other stock from a manufacture. I am replacing a PRS style stock with this because it is lighter and less expensive.
pretty good, comfortable
it's a pretty good stock. i think it's probably priced a little too highly for what it is, but i do like it. let's be honest, Brownells: it's a fixed stock. that's it. for the price charged, you could throw in a spring, tube, and buffer and still come out ok. slapping "retro" in cursive script on it shouldn't necessitate a markup in price. as far as the part itself, though, i like it. it fits me better than the A2 stock as i like to snuggle in really close to the CH. i do miss the trapdoor for cleaning stuff, but this stock makes up for it by being curved better on the obliques, slightly shorter for a better fir, and having a moveable sling swivel. im probably not going to looking to buttstroke russians coming through the fulda gap anymore, so i don't need anything fixed in place. this is a good, sturdy, comfortable, very lightweight, and slightly overpriced fixed stock. buy one.
