Pretty darm cool!
I wanted the Law Tactical but could never find one in 2020, lost hope. Then I learned about this great alternative from 17 Design. If you absolutely need an AR folder for a DI upper, then you get a free billet lower for less than the price of a Law Folder. My only gripe is that I'm a Magpul BAD lever kinda guy. All my lowers have them for commonality. This MFn 17 Design folding billet lower has so much extra/unnecessary material below the bolt stop/release hinge and magazine lever area that the BAD lever doesn't function correctly. I suppose the lower could be dremel tooled to fix the problem but I'm not ready to make that happen yet. Other than that, the lower looks great, the the finish matched my AP M4E1 upper, and everything about the hinge is awesome. The hinge is DEFINITELY less bulkier than the Law Tactical. Sometimes it's better to be second. Despite the picture, my lower came with the NEW H1 buffer. The old/original buffer would chip around the edges where it contacts the bolt. Apparently the Geissele Maritime bolt catch/release AND ambidextrous mag releases may not work in this lower either, but that isn't something I've had personal experience with. I may still get a Law Folder because I have more money than sense, but if this 17 Design billet folding lower burnt up in a fire, I'd likely buy another.
Great lower receiver with a small issue
This is a great lower receiver, everything went together great with one exception. The pin holes for the trigger are too large, and the pins in my lower build kit just slip right out of the holes and won't hold the trigger. I tried different pins from other lowers and parts kit, and its still too large. I now need to get a anti-walk pin kit to keep my trigger in place before I even get to test shoot it. Tried the lower on 2 different uppers and fuctions well. Mags drop easily (USGI aluminum, pmag gen 2 and lancer tested). The bolt release is threaded, thats a nice touch. The folder locks solid, and is tight so folding requires a bit more force than my Law gen 3, but it might loosen over time. Also, no instructions came with the lower, but I've seen a few videos on youtube, so I knew where the rear takedown pin detent and spring went. Happy with it, although there are some premium lowers at this price range, I liked that brownells got it to me for less than the price of just a law folder. With the brownells discount, it was a no-brainer.
ok but could be better
mag wont drop free, in fact, it takes a lot of effort to load a full pmag. maybe the aluminum ones work better. otherwise, easy to assemble. i did this lower with one of those cry havoc barrel systems for a very compact package.
Nice but needed a little work
Every part went in ok, except for buffer retainer was too long. As others have commented- I used my grinder to take off about 1/8 off the bottom of the retainer. Hope the company takes notice of all of us having the same problem and fixes the issue in manufacturing and/or includes a shorter retainer to use. Other than that, the fit and finish looks nice and its a good way of getting a folding style AR without another component being involved.
Overall happy with the lower
Very well built lower. Everything about this lower is solid and sturdy. I've bought two. One for a 5.56 10.5" pistol length build, another for a 5.56 rifle length build. I used a Tubbs flatwire buffer spring for both. It's my "go to" buffer spring. Both guns shoot smooth and function perfectly. Only about 100 rounds through each so not even broke in yet. The only issue I have is that for both lowers, I had to take material off the lower part of the buffer retainer. The hole isn't deep enough for a mil-spec buffer retainer to function properly. Some material needs to be taken off so buffer retainer can sink deep enough. Not a big deal, but for the price you pay you expect it all to meet mil-spec standards.
Overall great idea & good craftsmanship.
Let's face it, parts are hard to come by at the moment, so I have yet to complete the build planned for this lower receiver. Because of that, this review is based on my initial inspection of the receiver. This lower is 7075 billet aluminum, which is nice considering many billet receivers are 6061 T6. The anodizing looks fairly decent. The moving parts are clean, snug, and the tool steel reinforcements look strong. I have tried the fit of this lower with a milspec forged upper and Cross Machine Tool billet upper, and find the fit to be perfect. My lower did not ship with the tension screw, but it doesn't seem like I will need one. The proprietary buffer is a bit of a turn off for me, but is somewhat understandable. It would have been nice, especially for the MSRP to have included an adjustable weight buffer that didn't require removing the roll pin at the bumper. I was originally wanting to Form 1 this receiver for an SBR build, but the engravings for the logo and serial number are incredibly shallow. I am concerned that this may lead to problems later on, especially if a few coats of Cerakote or AlumaHyde are used.
Nice Folding Stock Option
Initial impression of the receiver is good. Everything seems to work as it should and seems like the mechanisms for the folding stock are plenty robust. My receiver was shipped w/out the tensioning screw which was a bummer, but the fit with my WMD Upper Receiver is very tight either way. I also had an issue with the detent for the safety, the hole wasn't quite big enough for the detent plunger to fully engage the safety lever. Opened it up a little bit and it functions fine. Also the engraving on the receiver is very hard to read, Safe and Fire are almost not visible.
liking it so far
given the price I could not turn it down . Seems like it will work . Only reason I gave it 4 stars is I have not had the time to fire more than 1 mag trough it ,but it performed well.
